FSU and Clemson to Big 12?

  • tricknole said...

Posted this on the FSU site:

Potential revenue as I see it (no sources, just best, conservative guesses):

$20M base Big 12 payout + $1M minimum per school to join the Big 12 (at least 4 new schools, as many as 6) + $1M minimum per school for the creation of a CG + $1M minimum for additional 3rd tier rights = $26M minimum for 14 schools, $28M minimum for 16 schools (+ the $6.6M we are already receiving from our ISP multimedia rights deal = $32.6M minimum) + Additional revenue by sending 2 teams to the football playoffs more often than the ACC (no one is able to quantify just how much that may be)

I have a hard time imagining the ACC topping that and while I have no idea what the SEC will be projected to make, if it comes out to $25M (from $17-18M), the top SEC schools may only be making in the $35M range. I know UF has a $10M deal with Sun Sports but don't know if they have any other 3rd tier/multimedia deals aside from that. And FSU's revenue vis a vis SEC revenue is all I care about because they are our neighbors with which we compete daily for recruits. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention I'd enjoy the matchups of a potential 14/16-team Big 12 over the ones in the ACC.

FSU in the Big 12 would have the interest of the Sun Sports network as well, IMO.

  • Yep contractor I missed the ooc, matchup with VT/WVU but just meaning to show some rivalry games that had been lost, A thought of VT/UT OR WVU would be exciting IMO as well, point is a TON of great potential match ups but yep your right, also left out Rutgers or USF prob headed to the ACC as well but..

  • VT fans want a good strong ACC but... If that goes away we want to take the SEC up on their offer. That probably gets NCSt to jump as 16. I don't care who the B12 adds that would be a tremendous conf with great geo continuity. VT would kill it in recruiting from VA-MD-PA-NJ

After 2 days of busting at the seams to tell you guys this I am finally allowed to spill the beans.

FSU wants in....but under their conditions...

FSU wants to be in a League on par with the SEC in both size and Competition. FSU wants the B12 to go to 14 FSU wants Miami FSU wants GT FSU wants the conference title game to be hosted at rotating sites FSU wants to keep ties to the Orange bowl in some way ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To throw a twist into things, according to this same person, Miami wants Boston College to tag along. There are a couple of things wrong with this. Miami is in no position to make demands, and should be grateful FSU is covering their butt. And I have no clue why BC would be interested in the Big 12 and visa versa. Also, that makes it 15, more than FSU wanted...they want 14 teams. The only credibility in this is that Miami was able to get BC during the ACC raid on the Big East several years ago. Maybe Miami really does want it. But the Big 12 should laugh at Miami asking for anything. FSU should tell Miami to shut up, or be left behind in a weak ACC. I call bs on this one. If true, drop Miami, add VaTech or Maryland and call it a day.

A WVU poster made my favorite post of the day: "FSU needs to give Miami a pop up book and tell them to be quiet while the adults talk."

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

first and foemost Texas doent do "conditions" for others which is why Nebraska,Arkansas,A&M and others left over the years.

second ? why would FSU and Clemson want the Big12 unless Tejas plans to unload its share of Conf revenues? the addition
of W.Va got alot of hype but arent they the same school that wasnt invited into the ACC & SEC to play ?

VT,FSU,Clemson,&Miami are as good as anyone not named Oklahoma in the Big12

  • I actually like Miami, it is UF I hate:)

Also the reason I assume FSU is pushing for Miami is so it remains a conference game allowing us to play UF and two cupcakes Ooc.

    Why is this important?

1- we love playing BOTH Miami and UF
2- allows for 7 home games (play UF + 2ooc in tally on years with 4 big12 home games and then UF in the swamp when we have 5 big12 home games + 2ooc)

1/2 or more of the Big 12 slate would be cupcakes why not play Miami & Fla as OOC games ?

outside of Oklahoma (and Texas) no one would "circle" any of the games on the schedule.

I didn't know that Clemson, WVU, TCU, Ok. St., KSU, and Baylor were cupcakes. Weren't all 6 ranked last year? So, if 9 of the 12 teams aren't cupcakes I see how that equals 1/2. Good try.

Oklahoma St is no joke (and TT had they not fired the Pirate, but alas), and we've been beaten by far worse *coughwakeforestcough* so, whatever. Add TCU and WVU in and...well...starts to look an awful lot like an SEC slate.

Definitely more compelling viewing than...Duke (or Pitt or 'Cuse coming up).

I believe 1st and 2nd tier rights are now shared equally. 3rd tier rights are still left for the school to sell, similar to the SEC.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 rights are now shared equally among all Big 12 members, but like in the SEC each school is able to sell their tier 3 rights and keep the revenue, so I'm not real sure where you are getting that Texas has some special benefits that any school in the SEC wouldn't have?

Also here is a little reasoning for why schools left either the SWC or Big 12.....Arkansas left the SWC, because they always felt like the odd man out since they were the only school not in Texas also the conference was hit hard with a ton of recruiting violations in the 80s and SMU getting the death penalty was the beginning of the end so Arkansas was looking for a place to land and the SEC came calling, Nebraska left because they never liked the way the Big 12 was formed especially after they weren't able to take partial qualifiers anymore and that killed their NC hopes most years in the Big 12, A&M left because they got tired of being little brother to Texas(even though they always will be), Colorado went to the Pac 12, when it looked like Texas, Tech, OU, OSU, A&M were all coming with them so I wouldn't say they ran from Texas they just made the move before the others and then the others backed out.

The SEC would never allow a network like the LHN and have said as much. We are forming a conference wide network anyways.

  • Good points Delaware, the biggest negative about the U for me is the threat of big time sanctions looming and the history of rule breaking, take that away and I agree good get.

So you aren't familiar with UF's Tier 3 deal, huh?

And BTW, UT wouldn't go to the SEC under any circumstances and have said as much.

with or without Fsu and Clemson, Texas is not going Indy.

this is 100% correct .. the new tv deal is going to extend the "grant of rights" (gives over all tier 1 and 2 tv rights to the conf) until the end of the deal 2025 ...

that locks the conf together for the next 13 years

Nc state shares a regents board with UNC .. they can't leave and with all the arm twisting and string pulling that UVA did you get VT into the ACC i doubt VT can split with UVA either

I don't think YOU are familiar with UFs tier 3 deal.

I know that they make around $10 million per year for their tier 3 rights. How is that any different from UT making $15 for theirs?

So what if it's not a channel devoted exclusively to UF sports. People can watch the Gators, and H.S. games :-0 on the same channel, while UF is making a ton of $.

    HoopsCoach

  • If the Big 12 went to 16 and added FSU, Clemson, GT, Louisville, Miami, and Maryland it would have a very nice and natural east coast and west coast division. Baylor would be in the east I guess. Conference would simply try to avoid Miami and Clemson doing anything with Iowa State and those super far away.

FSU should be in the SEC east though. Period. SEC are fools and pussies for not adding us.

  • UF is the reason your not getting in. Blame them.
