Not really surprised. A combination of socio-economic factors plus recent change in coaches within the draft class age reach probably have a lot to do with it.

I wouldn't put much of it on socio-economic factors. Kids from Florida went in the first round, they just didn't play at one of the Big 3. This is solely on the coaching staffs from a few years ago. Bowden's staff was lazy on the trail and horrible at player development. Shannon's was same and Meyer was losing control and quality coaches. Next year should start the streak back up as both FSU and UF have several guys who could be 1st rounders with a good season.

I still think the socio-economic factors concerning Florida and the recent recession will have an effect on Florida and her talent. Just like Florida's boom years is a huge factor in the rise of not one the football teams, but the state as a whole.

But yea, the coaching situation is probably the most contributing factor, though.

  • Giggle stick coaching staffs. Po ass kids from Florida have been going in the 1st round for years. What does economics have to do with it?

The football talent within the State hasn't fallen in any way.

At one point Florida was adding 200,000 residents a month. That's not happening anymore. Economics have a part, if small, in the rising, stagnating,or falling number of talent within the state.

  • The state still has plenty of talent, bit some of them have left the state like Trent Richardson and Sammy Watkins.

This is what happens when all 3 programs suffer from questionable coaching. I will give Jimbo a few more years to prove himself, but Randy Shannon to Al Golden to me just feels like a disaster, and well we know that Urban left Florida in shambles and that Muschamp is having to clean up a mess there.

Still has is key. I think it is possibly because of recent economic problems, there could not be a constant rise in talent poop seen in from 1980s-early 2000s. Just a thought.

You're right. Florida's population growth has slowed down and social-economics is a contributing factor, but it's still expected to grow over the next 30 years-

"The study projects an annual growth rate of 252,000 during the current decade and 255,000 between 2020 and 2030, but it's expected to decline to 220,000 during the following 10 years."

    http://www2.tbo.com/news/real-estate-news/2011/jun/13/2/uf-study-florida-population-growth-at-lowest-level-ar-237022/

That's an increase of roughly 7 million people over the next 30 years... Almost 1.4x Alabama's current population. If they move to the Panhandle area, that's alot of possible 5* for you team :-)

Oklahoma and Texas as well IIRC

No wonder we had an SEC rematch this year. Every team outside of the SEC to play in a NC game either didn't have a first rounder or had a bowl ban.

  • Saw a mock draft for next year with no FSU DL in it and Shariff Floyd at like #20.

Unreal. Some people who get paid to know stuff don't know jack.

Think Jenkins being looked at as a 34 OLB hurts that, and most still need to see more from Werner and Tank which will happen this year and at the combine

Michigan hasn't been putting out NFL talent for a minute now. Been pretty bad there lately. Hasn't stopped us from waxing that ND behind. biggrin

Hopefully Brady Hoke changes all of that. Except for the ND part. Hopefully he keeps that part going.

I am honestly more surprised at no OSU guys going 1st round. I'd take Mike Adams over some of the lineman that went ahead of him....even if he failed a weed test. That boy is legit.

No state could be in worse shape than California right now....that's per our Southern friends anyway.

  • Not worried about slowing growth hurting Florida recruiting any time soon. Growth has slowed but we aren't losing population like the Rust Belt was when football power shifted to the South. My personal opinion is also that a good portion of the kids who are highly recruited in Florida every year don't come from the most affluent homes. Much harder for them to pick up and move out of state. The slowing growth, slowing tourism and housing market worry me for reasons bigger than football. Well with the exception that some districts were actually tossing around canceling HS football permentaly due to lack of funds.

Like most have said next year is the year things get back to normal. Muschamp and Stoops will both have top defenses next year so both FSU and UF should put at least 1 defender a piece into the 1st

Jesus.... proving it to you and me isn't the same as proving it to those who are making the mock draft....

Thought that was clear since it was about who is projected where next year.... if I was saying it myself the JMO or IMO would have been used.
