    Fisher's FSU team will serve as the catalyst for this year's conference expansion.

    According to two people with the strongest ties possible to Florida State's Athletic Department, FSU fully plans on exiting the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State will begin its transition to the Big 12 Conference beginning this June. One source went as far as to say, "at this point the move is inevitable."

    Important dates to watch will be: May 30th, the Big 12 will have its conference meetings. June 15th, the new commissioner of the Big 12 when Bob Bowlsby will take office and August 15th, the deadline for any institution to withdraw from the ACC.

    Florida State leaving the ACC this summer will culminate a process that began with initial talks with an intermediary representing the Big 12 last November. Florida State did not officially reach out to the Big 12 until a week before the ACC's most recent deal with ESPN was announced. Florida State has long been frustrated with the leadership of its current conference and in the Big 12 believes it has found a partner that is more focused, and in touch with the current economic climate of collegiate athletics.

    Florida State will receive substantial financial help from the Big 12 in their exit fee from the ACC. Look for FSU to receive a similar deal that WVU received last year from the Big 12. FSU will be given anywhere from 10 - 14 million dollars towards the 20 million dollar exit fee. Much of this money will come from the exit fees the Big 12 received from Texas A&M and Missouri's departure. It is very likely that FSU will additionally then be loaned somewhere in the area of 3 - 5 million dollars from the Big 12. FSU's AD department will be responsible for the remainder of the costs associated with the departure from the ACC. FSU has boosters that have already pledged the money towards the remaining fees that are not covered by the Big 12.

    Florida State will enter the Big 12 as a full member in their first year.

    The Future of The ACC

    ACC Commissioner John Swofford Looks As Though He Has Been Outflanked By His Peers

    Clemson will almost certainly pair with Florida State as team 11 and 12 for the Big 12. Clemson has had talks with the Big 12 over a similar amount of time and when compared to FSU, Clemson and its leadership have done a much better job in navigating the challenges that are associated with a move as monumental as leaving a conference of which you are a charter member.

    Georgia Tech is also talking with the Big 12. I stress that Georgia Tech is only having conversations. They are by no means in the same place that Clemson and FSU are regarding exiting the ACC. But the fact that Georgia Tech is even engaging in conversations is significant as they were unwilling to entertain any idea as recently as three weeks ago.

    The fact that Georgia Tech is talking with the Big 12 gives you a pretty good idea as to the future of the ACC. The conference has been out flanked by its peers and will have likely have its work cut out to ensure its survival. It is very likely that you see the SEC make a play for two ACC institutions. One is likely to be Virginia Tech, the other has long been rumored to be North Carolina State. The Big 10 has always had an eye on expanding into new markets and the ACC possesses institutions in Duke, UNC, Maryland, and UVA that would pair well with their current culture.

    John Swofford took over as commissioner of the ACC in 1997. At that time, the ACC had the richest media rights deal in college athletics and the crown jewel of the college sports world in many peoples opinion was the ACC Basketball tournament. 15 years later Swofford faces the fight of his life to keep his league relevant in a rapidly changing world of college athletics.

  • It's happening.

    FSU will become a full member immediately. I've also heard the Big 12 will give FSU $13 million (coming from A&M/Mizzou buyouts) to put towards the ACC buyout and then loan FSU another $4 million to also put towards the buyout. I know the article mentions that, but those are more specific, "concrete", numbers I've heard.

    Also, I believe the Big 12 is going to guarantee FSU plays either UT or OU every year.

    Very exciting summer ahead.

    Do you think that means UT one year and OU the next? that would only account for a home game every 2 or 3 years with one of them. Or do you think it will mean they will be in a division with one of them and play the other on a rotating cross division bases.

    I would like to see it like this

    Frankly, I have a hard time putting a ton of faith in a rumor posted on the developmental url dev.chuckoliver.net, but it more or less just repeats rumors we have been hearing in various forms for weeks. And, if true, I would love to see the B10 pick up UVA and maybe even the pair of UNC and Duke.

    It could be done several ways. FSU could either be in the same division as one of UT or OU. However, I think most likely UT and OU will be in the same division (like they are now), FSU being in the other. In that case, I think the Big 12 will alternate home-and-home series with UT/OU and FSU.

  • I will never understand the fascination some of you have with UVA.. Have you ever been to a game there? its one if the most depressing atmospheres in college sports.

    and because you are aligned in a athletic conference does not mean they will cut all their research partners in favor of big 10 schools.

    Pitt/Rutgers - zero chance; they are fine schools, but don't bring enough (we passed on them last time around for exactly this reason)
    UMD - possible, but they are not as attractive to the B10 as UVA; I could see them as a pair with UVA or possibly if UVA says "no", but UVA is a better fit culturally/academically and is located in a larger state; they also have a larger (and fiscally sound) athletic department with more sports (content for BTN)

    to Maryland commanding all of 5.8 Maryland, a good portion of 900k Delaware and located in a suburb of Washington, DC

    I doubt anyone at the BTN thinks the BTN would go standard on cable subscriptions in VA because of UVA. It absolutely would not. Fans would not threaten to switch cable companies and go to DirectTV over a 5/10$ add on like they did in Ohio, PA and Michigan when it came out forcing it to become standard.

  • Based on 2011 viewership numbers for both football and basketball... UVA and Maryland made up half of the ACC's bottom 4 programs. UVA did edge out Maryland though.

    The bottom four was:

    #9: UVA
    #10: Maryland
    #11: WF
    #12: BC

    There was a pretty big drop off from Maryland to WF and UVA and Maryland was close. Still though, I wouldn't consider either one very valuable.

  • Maryland went 2-10 last year while UVA had its beat year in 10 years. Not very fair.

    - still funny how BC and their Huge market mean absolutely nothing and not one conference is even considering them for the next round of realignment

  • I'm convinced FSU and Clemson will be in the Big 12. FSU is a no-brainer and the other spot is a Clemson/GT/VT argument (in that order, in my opinion). Clemons wants in badly, so the Big 12 will reward them.

    As I said, UVA and UMD are similar, but UVA is more attractive for several reasons (which I listed). One of those is state population and TV households. It is not the only reason, but it is one reason. And cable companies do not take the state's population and divide by two because there is a second major university. They are negotiated individually for each service area with the specific cable operators that serve that area. And the B10 has tons of experience negotiating contracts with operators in states that have more than one major school and in states that are with schools that are near large media markets located in contiguous states. None of this is new. You can believe whatever you want, but your math is incorrect. It's just not how it's done.

    If you dont understand what I am saying that is not my fault.

    Never did I say it was statewide negotiated but rather it is implied that the cable companies that operate within the state will not put the big10 network standard because UVA is now in the big10. It is not standard in the south where I live and it will not be in Virginia if they are a part of the conference.

    Cable companies do not pay extra for something that is not going to be watched and is not valuable to their subscribers. UVA sports is not valuable to the people of Virginia.

    Yea if only the big 12 moves that might be it. If the big12, sec and big10 all make moves ND is bound to join one IMO

    You questioned the source, not the content, and admitted you don't know the source.

    The source is more reliable than most similar sites not affiliated with a major network.
