FSU to the Big 12 – “It is Inevitable”

  • Coastal Eer said...

Yea if only the big 12 moves that might be it. If the big12, sec and big10 all make moves ND is bound to join one IMO

ND is clearly a wildcard and I said so above, but trust me, the B10 knows ND as well or better than anyone. ND is stubborn. They are not going to be eager to join any conference and the B12 is not even close to an ideal situation. It presents many of the same issues the B10 does but without the academic prestige or CIC membership. Will the B12 offer ND special concessions that make a deal too good to turn down? Maybe, but UT doesn't exactly have a history of letting anyone else get a better deal than it does. And short of a special deal for ND, I don't see the obvious appeal of the B12. I also don't see ND moving quickly. They will be the last one to jump aboard the B12 train if at all.

You questioned the source, not the content, and admitted you don't know the source.

The source is more reliable than most similar sites not affiliated with a major network.

I don't know the source so I can't very well vouch for it. And in my original post I said exactly what I just said in response to your questions, namely that most of what is in the article is just a rehash of rumors that have been flying around for weeks. There is little or no news here.

    MrWoodson

  • I think aside from location, FSU and Clemson are both good fits for that conference. I have a ton of Nole Friends who will be doing kartwheels when/if this happens. I feel bad for Miami in this whole deal. Shalala and that admin don't care one bit about sports. Even if they were wanted, which they're not because of sanctions, lack of stadium, lack of fanbase, etc, she probably still wouldn't leave.

No one asked you to. But you questioned the source without knowing what it is or who it's contributors are.

As far as the content you seem to be so determined to focus on rather than calling out their legitimacy, all of these articles on expansion are repetitive. That's nothing new.

    Would we want UNC first?

    Would we want UNC first?

UNC would be an excellent add to the B10, but I doubt they go anywhere without Duke. I also think they will never abandon the ACC unless it becomes clear they have no other choice. So that means, to get UNC, the B10 probably has to wait for the B12 and SEC to move first and pull FSU, Clemson and maybe even VaTech and NC State. That would pretty much kill the ACC as a major football conference. Of course, if the B10 takes both UNC and Duke, that means we can only add ND if we are willing to go all the way to 16. I'm not sure the B10 wants to go to 16. I believe the B10's first choice would be to add ND and one more and stop at 14. So it's not as simple as just saying UNC is first or second on the B10's wish list. I think you have to be patient and count on ND's stubbornness while the B12 goes after FSU and Clemson. At some point as the dominoes fall, you try to grab ND and one of UVA/UMD/Syracuse/Miami/GaTech. UNC and Duke could be added later if the B10 decides it really wants to go all the way to 16.

Yes. I question most things I read online unless I know the source.

  • Honestly, I doubt any of the NC schools leave the ACC unless the conference is completely disbanded. I believe they are all tied together (share BOT's, government influences, etc) and are the core of the ACC.

    GO NOLES!

  • Reading a few tar heel boards seems like there are a number of UNC fans that want the SEC. A lot of their fans feel that is the best cultural fit for them. Duke, from what I've heard, is not at all.

only the public schools, Duke is Private..but they would never want to leave without UNC. If NC State can land on their feet at Big10 or Big12 I dont see the huge issue of them breaking up and UNC/Duke going SEC. More than a few would argue that keeping them all in a dieing ACC(assuming other schools leave) would be worse than breaking them up. They are all good enough schools to not get left out. Wake is private I think and it would be left out in the cold.

Can't see any conference getting bigger than 16. UNC I think is Mike Slives white whale. He probably wants them and VPI then close up shop.

That's a huge assumption. The one thing we know for sure is that ND will try to remain independent if at all possible. If that becomes impossible, it's anyone's guess what they will do. Two weeks ago, the same people were saying ND preferred the ACC due to academics and a better cultural fit. Now it's the B12, where the academics are far below the B10 and the cultural fit is awful. And FWIW if ND to the B12 was such a slam dunk, the B12 would be adding them instead of FSU or Clemson in the first place. I promise you one thing about ND ... that is no one knows what they will do. They might opt for the P12. Or they might try to cut a sweetheart deal with what's left of the ACC and Big East. Or they might join one of the B10 or B12. But anyone who says they know what ND is going to do is just blowing smoke.

Texas currently makes more than any other school with equal revenue sharing in T1/2 rights in the big12. The current extension puts Texas at 20million + 15million for Longhorn Network just for TV money. 35 mil crushes the other schools right now and with FSU, Clemson, ND and one other or even just FSU and ND that would push the T1/2 deal to at least 26mil + whatever ND can make off a t3 network which would probably be more or at least in the same galaxy as Texas.

Not saying they want to join, but the reasons they would is it is more money then any other conference can offer aside from maybe the new SEC deal in a couple years and it doesn't seem they want any part of the SEC

Also the big12 is the best non sec route to the championship

This is taken from the article about the new Big12/SEC Champions Bowl this week
"During the 14-year history of the Bowl Championship Series, the Big 12 and SEC lead the nation with 11 seasons in which each conference has had at least one team ranked in the top four of the final BCS standings. Both conferences share the top spot all-time with 14 teams each that have finished in the top four of the final BCS standings.

The two conferences have combined for 16 appearances in the BCS National Championship Game, with the Big 12 ranking second behind the SEC's nine appearances with seven trips to the National Championship Game."

Before the flame this is not proof ND will join the big12 but rather reasons why they would

I personally don't want ND, Now I know that there are a lot of big ten people that do, just not me. That would make three colleges from indiana. I would rather we took UNC, widens the recruiting base forces Duke in and makes well balanced conferece in football and basketball

I would take them if they came in just like any other school. No favors, special deals or any of there tag along partners. But yeah if given a choice I would take Carolina over them.

If you want to predict ND to the B12, knock yourself out. But your numbers are off.

First, UT got a sweetheart deal with LHN because ESPN was desperate to keep them from leaving for the P12 and destroying the B12. Texas also has something like 25 million people. Indiana doesn't. And even with those 25 million people, LHN hasn't exactly worked out as planned for ESPN.

Second, UT does not get all $15 million of the LHN money. About $5 million goes to IMG, which leaves $10 million for UT.

Third, ND gets $15 million now for nearly all of its tier 1, 2 and 3 rights. There is absolutely no way they would get $15 million just for their tier 3 rights alone. Again, UT's deal was priced based on the expectation that ESPN could build a network around Texas' 25 million people. Indiana's population is about a third of that.

Finally, if ND's first priority was TV money, they would have joined the B10 years ago. Every team in the B10 currently makes more TV money than ND. TV money will be a factor in ND's decision, but it is unlikely to be the deciding factor. At least it hasn't been in the past.

So, again, I have no idea what ND is going to do. But I'm pretty sure no one else posting on these boards does either. All anyone is doing at this point is guessing, which is fine as long as you understand that's what it is.

You have a need to correct everyone but you cant understand the post you are trying to correct. Its already happened in this thread alone 2-3 times with multiple people- Why keep posting about the big10 in a FSU to big12 thread?

ONCE AGAIN, IT SAYS IT TWICE IN THE BEGINNING AND END- Not saying they will go there but this is the reasons they would.

First- The longhorn network was the reasons member schools in the big12 got upset- this was not a after the fact savior, sure it helped Texas stay because other conferences didnt want to allow it but the longhorn network was before. ND value would be nationwide not Indiana such as what BYU is doing on a smaller scale. NDs "hook" is its the "Catholic" school

Second- 11 to Texas and 4 to IMG. its more than anyone else and when it becomes profitable they share in the profits so it would be even more. The 15 million(11+4 is guaranteed for 20 years)

Third- ND gets 15 Million for home football games on old extended NBC deal. If they had a network with basketball, coaches shows, spring game etc it would certainly be more valuable then most schools. Many big12 schools have a evaluation of around 4.9 million a year from third parties on T3 rights. Schools like FSU would be 7million or more. ND would be more valuable than all schools but Texas

Finally- Did i say TV money was all they were looking at? Or did I say this is a reason why they would go? along with big12 being the best Non SEC route to the championship

    1. ESPN didn't give Texas any sort of sweetheart deal. ESPN was bidding against Fox and 2 separate investor groups.

    2. Texas gets 83% and IMG gets 17%. For every 15 million that is paid out, 12.45 goes to Texas and 2.55 goes to IMG.

I doubt NC State goes anywhere w/o UNC. IIRC their part of a system. Also I’m not sure VT to the SEC is as much as a slam dunk as some make it out to be. IIRC the head’s in charge over there prefer the ACC from a cultural and academic standpoint. I don’t know how realistic this is but I would like the B1G to make a run at VT. I think they would fit well in the B1G.

From the outside looking in as a fan if the conference were to expand to 16. I would want either UVA, VT, ND, and BC or UVA, VT, GT, and Miami. Not sure if either are all that realistic though.
