Fan Violence in Sports

  • Another case of fan violence occurred this weekend in Ann Arbor. Regardless of the teams involved, why has this become such a commonality as of late? Do you think this kind of violence has always been going on but because of the severity of the recent cases more attention as of late?

  • It goes both ways... It's dangerous for you guys to come to Ann Arbor because a group of a-holes came to Ann Arbor (decked out in Spartan gear) to beat up Michigan fans at the game last season... and people haven't forgot. Honestly, if you start something, your life is in danger. I'd stay out of Ann Arbor and let this cool down.

You can't be serious. Go burn a coach and think about what you posted.

Two completely disgusting acts of violence if you ask me. What happened at the USC vs. UCLA game last year was completely unacceptable and the Dodgers vs. Giants game as well.

  • If it was the dude who sat next to me while wearing a Sparty shirt, I can totally believe he got assaulted. He was an obnoxious, antagonizing, loud mouth hater who literally ran his mouth every minute of the game. Even though I told him I didn't want to spend the entire "Under the Lights" night arguing with a Spartan fan, he simply could not and would not shut his mouth up. He lacked any semblance of class or respect.

If you wear a Sparty shirt to the Big House and State's not even playing in the game, you're openly looking to start (crap).

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

Crap is different then beating someone up. I am not trying to make this into a MSU vs UM flame war. This is happening all over sports right now.

What's wrong with what I said? I'm not trying to make this about teams. I'm trying to have a discussion about violence in sports.

Of course you are, just a pure coincidence that this happened in AA to a sparty fan.

Yeah, it's pathetic. Only weak individuals let rivalry get to their head and get violent. I'm really embarrassed that my fanbase behaved this way.

You could cite probably 100 different examples if you weren't trying to make this about teams.

  • That Raider nation seems to be rough bunch down in southern california. They even assault people at baseball games. I hope the fine people of A2 dont turn into some gangland culture of violence.

  • If I saw thugs in green and white beating the crap out of a guy just for wearing a maize and blue shirt I'd jump in and try to stop it. It's a moral crisis at that point and you have to stand up to it.

I've been to Raiders games before, that's a very violent gang oriented culture there. Definitely the most violent sports atmosphere I've ever been to. Reminds me of that movie Roller Ball.

  • Seriously, 99% of all of these "crazy" things going on in today's world have been going on FOREVER. It only seems worse because you get to hear about ALL of them AS THEY'RE HAPPENING, thanks to social media. The end is not nigh, I promise.

  • 1. Only shitty sports fans wear shirts/jerseys of teams that aren't even playing, especially for a rivalry game. If you want to go to the game, wear neutral colors.
    2. Doing something like this is just asking for trouble, especially if you are an asshole about it.
    3. We don't know the full story so we really can't make any assumptions about anything. However...
    4. There's no reason for physical violence against someone else, especially in downtown fuckin Ann Arbor.

  • Ann Arbor people are a passive crowd. It is when you get the downriver Kid Rock types who roll in into town with their pickups and muscle cars packed with coolers full of beer when the atmosphere changes.

There was an article a while back (don't ask me where, I forget) that discussed how one of England's most notorious ultra leaders (Chelsea FC group) had started to organize Raider fans into a soccer-style ultras group that just randomly started attacking opposing fans. Not sure if it was like that before, but it's still an interesting correlation.

EDIT: It's in a book called How Soccer Explains the World, and there's a section partway into the book which describes this guy named Garrison who helped teach Raiders fans how to act like soccer hooligans.
