If a man is invited as a guest or someone's date, and not a groomsman, a nicely tailored suit is fine.

A tuxedo is overkill if you're not a groomsman.

I don't need to read a book to know what to wear to a wedding or for any other occasion for that matter.

I was at a wedding 3 weeks ago in Hilton Head and not a single person was wearing a tuxedo. Good thing you weren't invited. You would have had your hands full writing all those fashion citations.

Men's Warehouse and Jos. A. Bank are NOT "very nice" men's stores.

I only get my suit's made from fine Italian establisments and I have bookcases made of mahogony with leather bound books!!!

It's about respect for the people who thought highly enough of you to invite you to their wedding. If you were not invited but were only a guest then you should have at least shown the respect to the person who brought you along.

The formality of the wedding itself typically dictates guest attire. If the groom is in a tux you should have at the very least been in a suit, a tux if the wedding was a truly formal wedding.

Major, I was raised that you do not wear a tux to a daytime wedding unless the invitation specifically states that it is a formal wedding. Typically speaking though formal weddings are reserved for the evening. My brother's wedding was held at Mountain Brook baptist and the reception held at The Club, the only people in formal attire were in the wedding party. Everyone else wore semi formal attire. Like I said, the invitation usually addresses such topics and guests are to follow accordingly. If the invitation does not clearly state the formality of the event, it is standard to speak with the brides family or the bride herself.

I and the other 90% of male attendees didn't show respect because we didn't wear a suit to a wedding? Having attended God knows how many wedding in my life, it is the guy not in the wedding party who shows up in a tux who looks like the idiot. I'd be curious to know what percentage of American males even own a tux.

The wedding I attended last week was for my GFs best friend, she picked out and purchased what I wore because I was the date of the maid of honor. Man was I disrespectful.

This and to look down on people because they didn't wear a tux to one is ridiculous. If someone asked me to wear a tux to a wedding and I was not in the wedding party, there is zero chance I am showing up.
