Large shark kills man in New Zealand; beach closed - Yahoo! News

  • Not trying to be an ass because its horrible, but why is someone swimming in the ocean that far from shore?

And why in that part of the world would anyone swim that far from shore?

I've never been to that part of the world, but it seems like one of the least likely places to be out in the ocean swimming. I could be wrong.

  • People who actually swim in the ocean for long distances are just playing with fire. You will more than likely be fine, but there is no reason to take a chance. If a Great White didn't get this guy it would have been a Tiger or Bull anyway. Sad, but it's not like it swam into this guys living room and ate him. When you enter the water you enter the food chain.

Agree. Who in the hell swims 650ft off shore in a place known to have great whites and other aggressive sharks this time of year? loco

People who apparently want to get killed by a shark. This is a horrible story and I do not wish it on anyone but when will people realize that when you go head to head with nature, nature usually wins.

Uh, probably so he could could experience the wonder and merriment of nature per se

Uh, maybe if you were a little more progressively minded you could understand that the ocean is like a beautiful peacock that's free from conservative capitalistic aggressors per se

Dude was toast regardless. Whites and tigers and bulls will eat you in 4 feet of water or 10 yards off the beach.

Interestingly enough, shark attacks in that part of the world seem to be rare. They say much lower than Australia. From the article:

"Duffy estimated that only 12 to 14 people have been killed by sharks in New Zealand since record keeping began in the 1830s."

Dude was probably just out for a swim really far from shore. Still something I would never do.

doubt it, whites & tigers almost always hunt solo.

"Mose said the man struggled with the shark and it swam away -- but quickly returned. He said three or four other sharks came to the area after the second attack."

Very strange. They usually bite and leave you to bleed to death. This one didn't play around. I wonder if the other sharks were Whites too or they were another species. Either way, this guy chose the wrong beach. That many sharks that quick in one area is strange. Something was going on with the bait or tides.

Exactly what I thought. This is their place though. It's like going to hippo infested waters and just trying to mess with them. Sharks are dangerous creatures. If you understand that though and use precautions like not swimming in an area they have a high population in the better you are.
