Fishing rod?

  • AxeManblue said...

i had no idea the Spanish Fly was killed

That is awful. He had one of the best fishing shows ever on TV. Man, that really sucks. But this guy lived more than 99% of people ever will.

As for the OP and OQ, I like GLoomis rods a lot. I have one on my 965 Penn International. But in my experience they are a bit of an over kill for freshwater fishing.

Have a Veritas that I use for worm fishing and I agree that it's a great rod for $100. As for the guy talking about how much cooler the GL2 looks, I totally agree, I wouldn't even consider it if it didn't have split handles.

Veritas is an excellent rod for that price point. for me personally, I would take the Veritas over the GL2 even for the same price. I used to use the gloomis GLX regularly until Mark's Outdoors quit swapping them without the $50 s&h waranty fee. No way I will pay that for a rod that is advertised by the company as a rod that will break.

Quantum has been the best for me as far as waranty work. I usually cut my rod up into 2 ft sections, send it to them UPS for about $5 and usually get a new rod in less that 2 weeks.

With ducketts its like $30 no questions asked and all you send is the piece of the rod with the writing and serial number. I have called duckett and they waived the $30 on less than a month old rods that have broke.

Yea he left Carrot stix over some argument about the development process. I have a Duckett cranking rod paired with an Abu Garcia Revo SX and it's my favorite combo. Thanks to everyone for their input!

    he left over waranty issues...

I don't think it's necessary to spend 200 dollars on a rod that catches fish under 10 pounds.

The quality (cost) of a rod has nothing to do with the size fish it will hold but rather the action it can impart while searching for an unattainable sensitivity. Way more technology goes into freshwater rods than into saltwater rods. Saltwater rods is about creating strong blank compostion.

I don't know about that. It's the same type of fishing in shallower waters casting to Bull Redfish, Snook, Tarpon, Bonefish, etc...But whatever,I'm in no position to give anyone a hard time for spending more money than they need to on fishing tackle. Take a Bass fisherman Redfish fishing and see if he can ever go back. I couldn't

Agree, but many people don't have access to Saltwater on a consistent basis. Red's are just showing up in VA now, next full moon will be a blow out on the bars and barrier islands

I do both. I have a Ranger Z520 and a Pathfinder 2400. I enjoy both but I freshwater fish more because there are more tournaments and opportunities to win money in freshwater. Also a day fishing freshwater is a lot less work once I get off the water than a day in salt.

Having said this, I can assure you that more technology goes into bass fishing period than any other species. Yes inshore fishing, especially for redfish will be very similar in tackle, but there is no where near the volume and thus less desire for development compared to bass fishing.

Sorry bud, I've never owned either. I own 3 St. Croix Avid's and the brand kinda stuck until they piss me off.

St Croix for the win. Thats all I own.

The duckett for the quality and the waranty. All ducketts are more of an even parabolic bend so you definitely want to go with XH instead of H for punching. Waranty is important with both of these rods as you can count on them both breaking eventually. If you want the gloomis and dont want to spend the extra money, buy a shimano as they use the same blank. (I believe shimano own gloomis now? not sure) If I can recall correctly a cumara has the GLX blank, a Crucial = IMX and Compre = GL2.

A new flipping rod out that has caught my eye is the Halo Rods, Twilight series flipping stick designed by JT Kenney. Warranty is sweet on this one too. It is hard to find the flipping stick though cause they are a hot comodity among those who have touched them.

Shimano bought Loomis from Gary Loomis. I think that was 5 years ago.

I just saw those recently. All instock expect for the 7-3 Ex-heavy. Mixed reviews, but most are on the good side.

You can spend $400 easy on a rod for Fly Fishing. Love fly fishing, regular fishing is boring for me now though.

I like Powel rods myself but in that comparison I would go with Loomis hands down,no questions asked.

For the money I have yet to find a rod as nice as the Powell Max lineup. I wish I could get all of my rods converted over. The Endurance series is nice, but for the money its the Max series all the way. I am in no way sponsored by them either, I just love their product. Good luck whatever you decide.

There is nothing quite like getting a trout to eat your dry fly. I love tuna fishing, but fly fishing is addicting once you start.

  • I'm not sure I will ever understand a 400 dollar bass fishing combo. But I'm sure people will not understand the 500 dollar combo I use for weedlines in the Gulf.

  • Update: I went with the Duckett simply based on how much better it felt to me, plus the fact that I already have one helped. I fished with it today, paired it with an Abu Revo SX and it's sweet! I actually caught a 5.4 largemouth on a square bill crank bait on it. I fished with my FLW buddy and he talked me into a Powell rod, so I will be purchasing a Powell rod soon(he's sponsored by them and said the main difference between the Max and Endurance was mainly the graphics?)! Best part is he can get them for me at a good discount! Thanks for all of your input guys...Tight Lines!!

I just started up this spring, hopefully I can grab a couple salmon this weekend and a ton of trout this summer.

I can understand paying good money for gear for any type of fishing. There is nothing worse than using a cheap reel and having the drag jerk or fail.

I have one Duckett rod. Its the 7'11"cranking stick, but i haven't used it much. Its a great feeling fishing rod though. That being said I think you will really like the Powell. If you don't want to spend the cash for the Max lineup check out their new Diesel lineup. Best $69.00 rod on the market. Awesome components, just doesn't have the Powell warranty so if you break it you are just put the $69. Check out Phoenix also. Anyway, tight lines and five good bites to you my friend.....

Ahh the $ doesn't bother me when it comes to fishing gear or golf lol. I'll definitely be pairing an Edurance rod with a Revo SX! I have the same Duckett cranking rod that you mentioned and I love it, it's nice to be able to crank all day without feeling like your arm is going to fall off. Paired with the right reel and you can chunk it a mile, not to mention its insanely sensitive(you can literally watch the wobble pattern of the crankbait by just watching the end of the rod).
