Five surprise classes

Dude, pretty lame bringing up a score of a game that happened over a decade ago - make that over two decades ago. It would be like Maryland fan brining up its lone victory over PSU and that happened in what, the Nixon or Ford Administration.

As far as 35-23, that is what the scoreboard read. Most knowledgeable fans would argue it was 24-???

Forgive me for the enjoyment shitting on the Scarlet and Ghey provides. Sanctions wont be bad but even at their worst will we never lose to them like that. If I would have put up more recent scores of us beating them they'd say it never happened of course.

  • I am glad you mentioned Indiana, Wilson is doing a solid job
On UW we will see how long they can keep their superstar recruiter, he is bound to be hired somewhere else sooner or later given how many miracles he works..good for them though. Oregon and Stanford need some competition

Really impressed with Freeze. Some instant impacts in that class. Interested to see how former top 40 player Brassell does

Agreed on Freeze at Ole Miss. Tulane being up there surprises me as well. I'm anxious to see how they do in the future and with some more "surprises" likely to come there way.

Curtis Johnson is doing work. He will start to scoop up any Louisiana guys that LSU isn't after. Santa Marina is a good example.

Curtis Johnson better play Nick Montana a lot or poppa Joe will not be a happy camper. Joe is still holding a grudge against ND and isn't afraid to let in be known. Really impressed with what IU and PSU have done on the trail. IU will not be an easy win over the next 2 years, IMO.

    Good deal JC.

I also think Chase Dutra has a chance to be a really good player for Indiana. Another talented Indianapolis kid that had a great senior season.

IU is quietly building a solid football program, they are going to be a tough team on future schedules. Nice Job Hoosiers.

They will always be a Basketball school. One solid class does not make a program. Wake me when the consistenly do it.

However, when you wake me I will be excited. A good Indiana is awesome.

  • JC...great write up

One thing i would have included is how surprising it is that m*chigan can't sign any playmakers, and how they think players named Taco and Butt will lead them to national prominence. I would have had them at #3 on the "surprise" list. Of course, I'm a little less biased than you are, so I understand.

Ped state class is top heavy by 4-5 recruits including one coming off an ACL injury who stayed with their commitments while the crap hit the fan.

It will be interesting to see if they can get these types of guys going forward.

Do you embarrass yourself everywhere you go?

  • Love seeing Tulane get some good pub. Nice looking out JC. I also hear that they are going to close very very strongly. I can see them finishing in the 30/40 range. Would be awesome.

  • I'm interested to see how BoB does next year recruiting wise. Let's see if he can pull it out again...

I'm very surprised most of the commits (yes, most the top guys committed before sanctions) stayed committed, but good for them. Glad to see some people still have loyalty

PSU already has a lot of talented 2014 kids interested, and things are only going to get easier recruiting wise as the bowl bans become less of an issue for each class.

    THIS!

The 2014 recruiting class and outcome of our 2013 football season will be the tell all tale as far as I'm concerned. If we can land a few top rated guys again in our 2014 recruiting class and win at least 8 games next season, I think all will be fine for PSU during the sanctions. We were practically already operating on that 65 scholarship limit this past season. Granted we had a phenomenal senior class that was HUGE in our overall success. Hopefully we have more young leaders like that step up in the coming years.

We have very few spots for next year, it should be an incredibly small class to get down to 65.

Thats what I was thinking too. I dont see you guys signing many highly rated guys next year but I'd say 2015, and 2016 you guys could.

Reason I say that is, 2014 the kids can only go to 1 bowl game (if PSU makes one anyways) and IMO is going to be rough for you guys soon.... only have 65 guys is going to kill you depth and ability to sign everyone the other big programs do.

But 2015, and 2016, you can sell 2-3 bowl games, playing time right away and playing with a good QB (Hackenburg, if he pans out) Not to mention BoB.

Not sure you understand the sanctions very well...The class of 2014 would be eligible for at least 2 bowls, 3 if they redshirt.

And as for the numbers killing PSU, pretty sure the team was working with somewhere between 65-70 scholarship players this year after the transfers, so I'm not expecting a huge drop-off. I don't necessarily think we'll be at least 8-4 every year, but I think the team should still be able to win around 6 and be pretty competitive against most of the league.

Your right, I was mistaken. Most of PSUs transfers were back ups anyways from what I remember. I'm not sure how many seniors you have but I think it's a pretty good amount

(I obviously dont know the ins and outs of PSU, so this will be my last post on the subject haha)

A lot of the transfers were backups, but I'd say losing your top RB (and arguably best player), top WR, your starting K/P, along with a LB who probably could have got some good playing time to be some significant losses. But you're right in that 4 or 5 of the losses would not have made an impact last year or most likely in future years either.

There are 31 players moving on this year but a lot of those guys weren't scholarship players and there are 2 or 3 RS JRs who aren't coming back for their 5th year who weren't contributing. Next year I believe will actually be one of the tougher ones for PSU because there won't be the same kind of impact SRs on the team next year and most of the top players will still only be sophomores and juniors. But like I said if O'brien can get in the 6 or 7 win range next year and stay competitive while having a young roster and a brand new QB, then it'll speak to his talent as a coach and give PSU a chance to be pretty good in three or four years when they start coming off the sanctions.

  • Currently, I believe that PSU has only 6 scholarships they can give for the 2014 class before they hit 65. Now, we all know that it is very unlikely that we will not have a kid transfer or leave early. I'm guessing we will have around 12 scholarships to give when it is all said and done. Our ranking will not be very good, but in these sanctioned years, the more important thing to look at is star average. If we get 12 quality recruits (3 star and above), that will be a big thing moving forward.
