Florida denies admission to a top recruit

  • Top signee denied admission by UF

Four-star defensive tackle Dante Phillips has been denied admission to the University of Florida, according to his stepfather, Damon Wilson.

“We were kind of blindsided,” Wilson said Monday. “He did everything he needed to do to be cleared by the (NCAA) Clearing House, but now he's been told he doesn't have a scholarship to Florida.

“He's been cleared by the NCAA. He's academically eligible. But the admissions office says he can't enroll at Florida. If he can't get in there, we have to look at other places. He's got some offers out there. He's totally qualified (academically).”

Wilson said Phillips is appealing the decision with the admissions office, but that he does not expect to win the appeal.

“We'll know something later this week,” Wilson said. “There's only a small chance of them reversing the decision.”

UF officials could not comment on Phillips' academic situation.

Phillips, who attended Venice High School, committed to the Gators more than two years ago and signed with the Gators in February after strongly considering Miami in the closing weeks of the recruiting season.

Wilson said Phillips always thought he was in good shape academically to enroll at Florida.

Phillips was in Gainesville last Thursday when UF informed him he had been denied admission.

“Something like this should never happen,” Wilson said.

Two other highly rated defensive line signees — Dante Fowler and Jonathan Bullard — also are dealing with academic issues and have not been cleared by the admissions office to enroll.

This happened to to PSU signee D. Givens a few years ago (he ended up a Rutgers and then eventually transfered out to who-knows-where). I feel bad for the kid, although I am sure he will have some options.

  • Didn't South Carolina have a few problems with a similar situation a few years ago? Wish the best for the kid, I'm sure Muschamp is about to go ape shit on whomever made this decision.

  • It happens, and usually the kid or his reps release a statement that unintentionally or not, makes the school out to look like the bad guy.

We had one recently who had to go prep school, then had too big of an ACT score jump for us to take him. We ended up looking like a-holes to the uninformed, Louisville tried to take him, he ended up at JUCO, and now he's coming back as part of the 2013 class.

Hope it works out for Phillips in the end and he doesn't get lost in the numbers.

We've had a couple. Spurrier's first year 2 kids from NC were cleared by everyone but admissions. Spurrier basically said if this is the way it's gonna be, tell me now and I'll go somewhere else. Admissions loosened up but the bridge was burned at that high school.

Had the one I mentioned above. Also had 2 kids who were victims of oversigning if you believe what you read. That was a large class but there were 5 kids who weren't going to qualify and 3 LOIs available to sign. 3 in-state non-qualifiers got to sign and the 2 OOS non-qualifiers would have been able to enroll in the fall if they qualified, but not sign LOIs. The most publicized one tried Louisville as well but couldn't get in as a partial qualifier and last I heard ended up at that scam prep school in NC that was profiled on E:360.

  • Must be wrong...this only happens to lower rated recruits.

Same with Demar Dorsey. He had some suspicious numbers and was not admitted. Louisville said they would take him. He ended up at JC. I have a feeling that these admissions offices know a thing or two about funny transcripts.

Comparing Meyer to Mushcump is like comparing a Lamborghini (Meyer) to a Nissan Versa (Muchcump).

Huge pickup for Miami or Ole Miss. Al Golden will cut a man's throat to land a DT over 6'0

#Gators BUCK Dante Fowker just texted me back to let me know he is cleared to enroll at UF

Phillips is a loss no doubt, but he would have been 5th or 6th string DT.. Fowler making it in is way more important than Phillips, and he has finally been cleared..
