Fly Rod/Reel For Beginner

  • Looking to get into fly fishing and want a good yet inexpensive rod and reel. Anyone got any suggestions?

  • I've been wanting to do the same. In my research so far I have found that Orvis has some starter combos for around $150. I know they aren't a premier company but I think that is reasonable considering the price of other things I have seen. And since this is my learning rod/reel, I don't feel bad going on the low end.

Thanks. I'm in the same boat. Love to bass fish and go out in the gulf but I'm not prepared to spend a bunch of cash on something I could end up not using...

What kind and where are you going to do most of your fishing. This will make a huge difference in what people can recommend.

Orvis is actually a pretty good company. They have been in the fly fishing game for some time now. They make rods for starters and also have rods that reach up in the $800 range.

To be honest I don't fly fish at all. There's a fly shop around town that has a special giving 1.5 hour lessons for $20. I had been considering buying a rod for a while and I think this is a good impetus to go ahead and get one. If I were to start most my fly fishing would be done in the southeast (AL, TN, GA)

The most generic answer would be to get a 5 wt 9ft rod. 5wt/9ft is considered to be the "all-around", it all changes when you start targeting different types of fish in different types of water. There are many companies that make this intro "all around" rod. I can recommend some brands and combos, but that would pretty much be it, without knowing the water in those areas.

Your best bet is to go into the fly shop and ask them what is the best setup for the type of fishing that is done in that river/lake/etc.

    Here are some good brands:

    www.echoflyfishing.com/
    http://www.rossreels.com/
    http://www.winstonrods.com/

Once you get that, then you have to figure out what kind of line you want for the type of fishing you are going to be doing. Things might be complicated at first, but guys at fly shops are usually very nice and helpful.

  • Thanks for the info. Since I plan to do salt I'm probably going 8wt.

Gotta save up a bit and carve out some time for it mostly.

There are some interesting fly-fishing vids I have seen online show all kinds of crazy salt lures and not just your basic flies. Makes it more interesting I think. I also like not having to lug a lot of stuff.
