Football is just not an important game

  • Sitting here thinking about the Tulane Player that had his neck broken this morning. Put yourself in his shoes. Imagine.
You wake up this morning around 6 AM, you go grab some breakfast with your teammates. You are cutting up with them and you're a carefree 20 year old. You have your whole life in front of you and your'e a D1 college football player. You're king of the world. You really feel like that. After breakfast you call your mom and dad and talk with them for for a minute. You may even talk to your little brother, sister, tell them you love and you'll see them after the game. Before game time, you're extremely pumped. Ready to go knock some heads off. As you enter the tunnel, you've got butterflies that can only be described as the best feeling in the world. Stop right there. 20 minutes later, your'e laying motionless on the field while the teams trainers do everything they can to keep you breathing. You're having an on the goddamn field Tracheotomy. Your lung collapses. Your life as you've known and enjoyed is all but over. This game of football doesnt mean anything. If Alabama never wins another game or Auburn never beats Mississippi State again, it just doesn't matter. Its meaningless, really. I am 35 years old and have just now realized this. I was so fvcking ignorant.

  • Sitting here looking @ my 4 month old daughter, I know there are more important things than football. Prayers for devon wall, his family and his teammates. They had to run a trache on him in the ambulance, so he very likely had brain trama on top of neck and collapsed lung.

That's not what I said in any way. It just puts the importance of the game in perspective. For me at least. I know the risks in driving a car to work. Its no different. Just a sad situation anytime you see a 20 year old most likely lose everything from the neck down for the rest of his life.

Yeah, football isn't meaningless. It is dangerous yet productive way to develp fitness, sportsmanship, friendship and teamwork. We all feel for the kid but i find it more amazing they were able to do all that on the field. I am so happy that he is going to make it. I think more focus should be put on amazing training and medical staff then on neutering football. Unfortunately these types of things will happen from time to time but lets not blow it out of proportion. I can certainly understand why you and also that poor football player would feel that way op. Life changing events not only effect the victim but also fans. I bet if you asked the kid a few years down the road he wouldn't change anything in his life and is looking forward to doing what he can which is raising awareness to dangers in football and raising money to help pay for his type of injuries.

Exactly... A person has to weigh risk/reward and do what they feel best... Can't prevent life from taking its course. Most of us chose to play ball, ride 3 wheelers/4 wheelers, dirt bikes, jet skis, cheer for the Canes, go skiing, white water rafting, hiking, etc. Thankfully I'm still here... but my back is f'ed, my knee is shot, almost every finger is crooked, wrist is useless, etc.. and I'm only 28. lol

Their dangers in everything man. Your post is nice and all but you cant live your life in fear. I loved playing football and i know that guy did. Its the same as driving a motorcycle those things are death machines but people ride them because they LOVE IT. These people that are trying to ruin football are trying to destroy the thing me and prob all CF players love. This morning while you were driving your car you had a higher chance of dieing in a car wreck then that guy dieing on the field. The fact is life is dangerous. You can live your life in a bubble, im gonna live mine to the fullest.

  • Most of you are twisting what OP said. All he's saying is football was put into perspective when the incident happened -- that it isn't anymore (or shouldn't be) as important to him as it was before this epiphany.

He's not saying he wants football to be wussied down, or that the player didn't know the risks, or that he is going to start walking to work.

i didnt twist anything . Hes saying the game is pointless but its not TO ME.People love it the players love it it impacts their lives for better or worse. I understand thats his personal opinion. What i said was also directed at everyone that is attacking football for being to ruff it pisses me off. These players voluntarily play this game their not forced. These people need to find something else to complain about.
