For some of you guys that know a lot about cell phones

  • I'd like to find a unlocked cell phone so I can use it over in afghanistan. It needs to either be a apple or droid.  Also be able to use a sim card.

    Any suggestions?

    Satellite phone? How many towers are still standing in Afghanistan? Other than that, check out newegg or amazon and make sure the phone is GSM capable. I had a friend in China just buy a phone over there.

  • They sell them over there with the sim card. When I was there last year I picked one up for about $110 phone and sim card. You only get a limited amount of min but still it was nice to have. He might be able to pick one up cheaper off of someone leaving and just pay for the new sim cards.

    You might want to check with the State Department, i.e. where you get a visa to travel abroad. They can advise you on a lot of foreign travel related questions like this.

    Hmmm I have only seen them at little shops that we have on base. Not to sure if you can buy them online or not and if you did I am betting it is going to cost a lot more. What bases is he stopping by on his way over? Because if he stops over in bagram they have some good phones to pick from and are cheap.

    I used mine so the wife could get ahold of me anytime she needed to. But Skype would be the best and cheapest way to talk with family back home. Those sim cards don't last all to long and some are not cheap.
