Former ND lineman on Seau...

  • Someone posted this on our board... Former ND lineman Eric Olsen on Junior Seau. Pretty amazing story, thought you'd like it.

"Wow this is a tough one, when I was a frosh in HS Junior Seau worked the Jay Fiedler Football camp and at the end of one of the days he challenged anyone to a 1-on-1. Being one of the ‘big’ kids, I was volunteered by my buddies and went up in front of the whole camp to face this monster of a man. Shaking in my cleats, he gave me a wink before a coach gave the cadence. He let me pancake him. And he sold it too. I can’t even tell you how good I felt at that moment; it changed me forever. The whole camp cheered for me, a chubby kid that didn’t know if he even liked football. From then on I was addicted. All thanks to this 10-time all-pro that felt like making some snot-nosed kid’s day. Doesn’t seem like much but it meant a lot to me. Sorry for the essay just had to share. RIP Junior I’ll never forget what you did for me."

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

Thanks so much for posting this, I read it and tears ran down my face. Here is another great story, not surprisingly, they're popping out all over the place.

The Night Junior Seau Picked Up A Marine Captain's Tab And Serenaded Bar Patrons With A Ukulele

An email arrived this morning from Albert Flores Jr., a U.S. Marine Corps captain who lives in Sneads Ferry, N.C. Its about a chance encounter Flores had last year in a Southern California bar with Junior Seau, the former Chargers and Patriots linebacker who died yesterday of a suspected suicide. This is the email in its entirety, with slight edits made for publication:

He was one of my heroes growing up. A great player and a great dude. Its so sad that no one was able to help him in time. Fight on!

Saw that on FightOn yesterday... still brings up emotions... Feels weird since I saw him at the Spring Game a couple of weeks ago and he was just smiling and waving to the crowd... The whole thing is surreal.

This is something I can't get out of my mind.

Junior has always been a proud Trojan, but very busy with his life. He wasn't as visible in the program like Ronnie Lott, Marcus Allen and Anthony Munoz, etc.

He showed up at the San Diego Trojan Club dinner a few months ago, talking about his love for USC, and how much he was involved behind the scenes, telling guests that they were the first he has told this to.

Then he shows up at the Huddle with seven other Trojan greats..

I read that he sent text messages to his former wife and kids, told them he loved them. Was he trying to prepare them for what was to come?

To those outside the Trojan Family, this has really really hurt us..so please, before you post what you feel about suicide, consider that this was a man who many loved, and it hurts more to hear and read the criticism. Step back and simply celebrate the life of a good and decent man.

I honestly don't know... Those closest to him had no idea this was coming... The Marcellus Wiley video yesterday pretty much summed up the surprise imo. It would be a far, far stretch for someone to think "suicide" simply from a text... It seems like he just didn't reveal any unusual patterns to anyone else, even his family...

    Bump for the evening crew.

All of the links posted ITT are awesome/sad.

Thanks for understanding how much we're in shock and sadness, it just seems right to talk about the good things. Stories are being told on radio, news and people calling in. This is another story someone posted on another USC site..

Last night I was listening to sports talk radio and they dedicated the whole segment to Seau.

This guy called from Michigan and wanted to pass along this story. He said he and his entire family loved Seau. Now it's a random caller on sports radio, but his voice was cracking as he relayed this story.

Several years back the caller's mom lived in the East Coast and started chatting online with a fella in SD. The guy eventually convinced her to meet him @ Seau's restaurant in SD. She left to SD by a 2-day train ride but was embarrassed to tell family members she met a guy online. She sat quietly for 2 hours @ Seau's and ordered only water and a small salad. Finally, a waitress told Junior that she thought the situation w/ the woman seemed odd.

So Junior approached the woman and to break the ice, he asked if she were Samoan. She replied no, she was Puerto Rican. Eventually they talked for awhile and she finally admitted that she travelled a long distance only to be stood up. Her return ticket was for several days later and she wasn't even sure where her hotel would was. Junior told her that she had 4 sons, her 3 actual sons in the Northeast and for that weekend, 1 in SD - him. He arranged for a 5-star hotel stay for the weekend for her. Arranged for her meals, visits to SD's attractions and some shopping trips. All prepaid by him. And he took care of her return trip - a first class or business class flight back home rather than by train.

The caller said he and his entire extended family was always grateful for the hospitality Seau had for his mother.
