@schadjoe: NCAA expert attorney Michael Buckner read Freeh Report and said it does not show lack of institutional control as defined by NCAA Manual

Uhhh really? How about the fact that JoePa was their compliant center?

Maybe because he knows what LOIC is, as well as when and why it's enacted? I guess he didn't see anything, much to devidee's chagrin, to shut down the program.

I am currently preparing myself to be heckled by morons that think that PSU fans/alumni/students are guilty of child rape due to the transitive property. 4 people do not represent our whole university, plain and simple.

You and getmyjive have always been levelheaded, but anytime punishments are discussed you both seem to think nothings warranted. The people involved will face criminal charges, but the university needs to pay their price too.

I never said that punishments aren't warrented. They are. But it is not of the NCAA variety unless more comes out eventually that PSU violated clear NCAA regulations. As Michael Buckner said, that is not that case AT THIS TIME.

But if the NCAA digs deep enough, I'm sure they can find something.

@schadjoe: Freeh says PSU "concealed critical facts" "in order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity."

I agree. I just said shutting down the football program isn't warranted, which is what I was responding to. That's not saying "nothing is warranted." I think the NCAA should do what it feels is right, but I do not think shutting down the football program completely is justified. I do not think it fits directly under their LOIC definition, but I do think they have a right to do something drastic, seeing as this is clearly a major exception and they will only set a real precedent for decade long cover ups of child rape, unlikely to play out much more.

It's anybody's guess as to what the NCAA will do.

Freeh Report does demonstrate Penn St exhibited a lack of institutional control as it is generally understood and defined.

Why was the channel changed on campus when the Freeh report came out?

How on Earth would I know? I'm sitting in an office in Philly, not running the televisions in the auditorium on campus.

I wanted to believe that Paterno was innocent in all this, that he was just naive or something, but dear god, the skeletons they're digging up are covered in dirt. This is getting absolutely ridiculous.

I did too. I really thought he just didn't understand what was going on. I mean the guy basically lived in 1958 Pleasantville his whole life.

I was very, very, very wrong.

Too bad you don't have VIP access to the PSU board. No one is defending Paterno.

Thanks for the nice remarks though...

Shutting down the football program will also shut down the 29 other sports that need the program's revenue. It will also drain the economy of Centre County and the university I graduated from. No, I will not be demanding the football program be shut down. I am demanding action be taken to prevent anything like this every happening again and to bring all those involved to justice. But you'll just spin this into "he supports child rape," so, oh well.

Something must be done. I understand that all involved are gone but the university/football program must be given a massive punishment. Let them play, but vacate any "wins" for a year or two. Automatically preventing any chance at a bowl game or the CCG. Current/future players still get to take the field, seats get filled, concessions are sold etc.. Let the program continue as if nothing happened, but it doesn't count in the record books, asside from individual statistacs. I'm trying to be as objective as I can. It allows things to move forward, essentially not punishing the individual players, while still holding PSU accountable.

It's the NCAA. They'll dock you 3 scholarships, give you a 1 year bowl ban retroactive to some year you didn't go to a bowl and put you on 1 million year triple secret probation.

    That's what they do.

    But if a kid gets 2 D's.....guillotine.

True. Who decides what the scope of the NCAA's authority is? Nobody but the NCAA.

  • My thing is if they covered up sandusky so it would not tarnish the program.. What else have they covered up as far as player misconduct etc..

That is where the NCAA might come in and investigate with a microscope

If you are ok with covering up the rape of children, it stands to reason you will cover up absolutely anything.

I find it impossible to believe an attorney:
    1) Could pass any Bar exam without being to able read and comprehend.
    2) Could look at that report and not see a LOIC.
    3) Could not read/interpret the NCAA Manual's LOIC definition.

If the NCAA does not see rules broken, especially LOIC, they should remove themselves from any apparent, implied or otherwise given powers they possess. If the NCAA has him as an expert, then I question their own validity as an organization.

    Good question.

They didn't just cover this up, they rewarded the bastard with emeritus and a near $170k payment within months of the 98 incident.
