GT to Big 10?

Notre Dame's future conference home is a topic you could write books about its been discussed so much. The title of the book could be, "ND and B1G? Never in a million years"

Most of the time on here we are able to banter back and forth our opinions, on something like this there is an encyclopedia of informed opinions. Im just repeating those.

Geographics has little, if anything to do with it, imo. It's about the institutions. Places of higher learning. That's what the B1G represents..and so does ND..cheers

_ichigan Football would be Minnesota without The Great State of Ohio!! O-H! I-O!

  • This is strictly a revenue move. Atlanta is the 8th largest TV market. That's insane! Baltimore is 26th, but MD pulls the DC market also which is 9th. This is tremendous revenue growth for the network.

    Matt Lauer

  • Whoever gets FSU is getting these markets
    Tampa /St Pete - 13
    Orlando / Daytona / Melbourne - 19
    Miami / Ft. Lauderdale - 16
    Jax - 47

(If that's what you meant by dark side)

    Agree completely

There is nothing exciting about playing in the big 10 with the exception of OSU, Mich, or Nebraska.

Except, of course, ND's traditional rivals of Purdue and MSU.

I'm still hoping the B1G lands Texas...as soon as they realize LHN wasn't thought out and was about ego...well see what happens.

None of the Big 12 schools are leaving the Big 12 anytime soon. All agreed to a Grant of Rights. If Texas left, their TV rights stay with the Big 12

It is not about revenue from sports. It's about academia.. and those dollars..

Well I am no ND insider but this conversation is usually folks using logic and coming up with what you are saying but ND will never join, according to folks I trust, because of other issues.

  • FSU to the Big 12 just started putting up smoke as well. Could move quickly if GT departs.

Yeh I agree about GT obviously having no real effect on kids. It's a Dawg state, not naive enough to ignore that, and a southern state as well. Just some inroads are better than none at all.

Georgia gets raided by Alabama,Auburn and Clemson on the reg. Hardly a dawg state.

Did you read where I said southern state as well?

Georgia consistently gets more players from there than anyone else.

It's a high-caliber state for recruiting. Kids will not have a problem leaving for any school given the right circumstances for success and development. Ohio State, Michigan will have zero problems grabbing kids more often with B1G footprint in the peach state. JMO.

I don't think it will be zero problem. Getting kids to come north to play from the south with the lure of the SEC and warm weather is quite a challenge. It will be easier though for sure.

Georgia is talent rich state, and a state that isn't completely locked down like other southern talent rich states.

Notre Dame does not see itself as a Big Ten university. It really doesn't fit in with the Big Ten. It's an undergraduate university with a well rounded education.

Based on my conversations with actual alumni, it seems as though it's more of a Gen Ed university with concentrations rather than a big university with diverse majors. It's a great school but they have a different education outlook than say Purdue, Michigan, Penn State, and so on. Many Big Ten universities concentrate on graduate schools and research. Not that ND doesn't do that also, but they have a focus on undergrad that other schools in the Big Ten don't.

I would love for ND to join the Big Ten but it's not a Big Ten school. Alumni of ND would probably agree.

Secretly, I don't want ND to join the Big Ten. It's a unique school and as far as sports goes, it should remain an independent and just feed off lesser conferences to house their non revenue sports.

That's the ND spin, but it's a load of crap. ND has been in a conference for nearly two decades ... the Big East. And they recently just agreed to leave the Big East for the ACC. ND is simply withholding their football program hecause it's best for their football program. It has nothing to do with academics or research. It has to do with football. And that's fine, just like it will be fine if UT eventually goes independent for football. And just like BYU was in the MWC for awhile and has now gone independent for football. Schools have every right to run their football programs however they want so long as it's within the rules. But these are football decisions, not academic decisions.

Yep, they absolutely have every right to remain independent.

Conversely, the conferences have every right to put a de facto playoff system in place via conference championship games, thus excluding all independents. Which is why what is best for ND's football program will ultimately be to align themselves with a major conference, whenever that ends up being.

Now they just have to decide how much they care which conference it is, and how soon they need to act to secure a spot in that conference.
