That's irrelevant. I went to public school. I know kids in public school. I know parents and people who send their kids to public school. What you said is the exception, not the rule. Period.

And how's this for a rule - since 2008, free- and reduced-lunch in this county has increased by 15%. There's 13 elementary schools in this county who are at 90% or more. You think that's perception and exception?

Those are people who are getting it handed to them. Those numbers are increasing, not going down.

Facts sure do suck, don't they?

No. You are not arguing that people are getting assistance. You are arguing that people get assistance when they don't need it. You need stats to back that up.

  • I'm not saying we should give more or less welfare either way, but might there be a correlation between the increasing number of people needing things like reduced lunch prices and the decline of the economy?

If you think that 90% of 13 elementary schools in Gwinnett County ACTUALLY need it, then you're detached. Those numbers may come down, but once they get on, it's hard to get them off.

What part of Gwinnett County? I've been looking for an apartment in N/NE ATL and looked extensively all overy Gwinnett, DeKalb, and Fulton Counties and all of them had plenty of... less than stellar neighborhoods.

    Sweden laughs at this.

Talk about hilariously bad examples. Anyone that has a fundamental grasp of economics laughs at Sweden.

Sweden's entitlement state has been a real winner. Before they introduced their ludicrously high marginal tax rates it had the most screaming economy in the free world. 50% of their richest citizens have bailed. Really works miracles with their treasury. And what happened when the working class were saddled with 50-70% rates?

They worked less, retired earlier, took more disability, took more unemployment and for longer periods, took more sick days and took more vacations. It crushed their growth.

Of course there is. Just like we saw an astronomical increase in people who are on welfare from 2008 to now.

Come on man. It's like everyone on here has take things to extremes.

I'm sure you've heard this: When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for ... you have some serious challenges.

You probably wouldn't be able to provide it, but its not a very good gauge without demographics. I'd also wonder what the rates are now, the impact of temporary or permanent state and or federal programs to expand elligibility. There are a lot of complex factors.

Yes, but the only reason PPP GDP is now up again in Sweden is because they have all but abandoned their previous universal care model.

The Swedish model was a complete fail, and even though they've turned away from it to a large extent they're still suffering from the hold over policies.

What we truly strive for in the US I'm not sure is even possible. Taxing the 1% at a higher rate does nothing. You have to hammer the majority with higher rates to provide all the care/education/social services we want to provide. Yet higher taxes stunts growth and too many entitlements kills productivity. Somewhere in there lays a balance...

I couldn't care less about the demographics. The fact of the matter is that over half this county students receive government-assisted food benefits, and that number is going up. That's keeping with the trend that we see in overall government assistance at 47 million people, which Hussein doesn't argue.

The numbers don't lie. People are hopping on the gravy train.

True blanket socialism blows and does not encourage growth. But social services isn't socialism. And Canada isn't socialist by any stretch of the imagination.

No. The numbers most certainly do matter. If 90% of the elementary is say above the poverty line, it wouldn't make sense that 90% recieved assistance.

Again. You are missing the point. You are trying to argue an existential point with philosphical rationale.

5 children is no accident, brother. That's a choice. Just having ONE child is a choice. I love kids. I have three of them. In fact, I've dedicated my life to raising them, and I work everyday in an environment to help kids.

My wife and I actually wouldn't mind more. But we're going to struggle to provide the kind of life I want to provide with the three that we have. So we CHOOSE not to have anymore. If we had two more ... WE might be on the gravy train.
