Look, I'm not singling you out, and I would fight for your right to speak your mind and follow your beliefs..but this is where it crosses the line...the OP, his family and specifically his sister, escaped a potential horrific tragedy, and he felt enough relief, and thankfulness to share it here with others. Why not celebrate with him, in the manner he saw fit, and save the agendas for another day, or situation?

That is where good manners come in...know when to fight your fights, and when to just let have someone his moment of thankfulness, in the manner he choses.

That's all nice and good, but there's a difference in 1 person unknowingly being uncurtious to someone with no bad intentions versus a slew of people attacking him and calling him names and using religion as a basis to bash him.

Why not just say what you just said to him in the first place instead of 20 posts telling him he's an awful athiest douchbag?

Not to mention the fact that the guy never said anything about his own beliefs, and they automatically labled him and bashed him based on what they assumed his religious and spiritual beliefs were!

I believe we've had this argument 10 million times and it always turns out the same... Atheist are douche bags. They just want attention.

Way to make a horrible generalization about an entire group of people based on the actions of one.

All Christians are weak-minded fools who believe in something that makes absolutely no sense either because they had it pushed into their heads at a young age or because they're so terrified of the unlnown that they had to create a special friend.

See? I can do it too

Op, I'm glad everything turned out ok. There's so much garbage in the world today that it's nice to hear things like this.

  • Believe in what you believe in, but for me it is God. My wife and I had one son 13 years ago. We tried and tried to have another, but the doctors said it would not ever happen and that it was a million to one shot just to have my 13 year old. Well on Sunday, my baby boy turned 5 months old. That my friend to me is God's work.

I've seen prayer do too many things to believe otherwise. During an ultrasound for my youngest daughter the doctor saw something that concerned her very much, and even with my untrained eye I saw it too. She scheduled us for another ultrasound a week later with a machine that can see a lot closer. The doc was expecting to tell us what was wrong that day. We prayed fervently for a week, as did our church and family. A week later the picture we saw was very different than the one before. Neddless to say the doc was very surprised, and we were very thankful. Sarah will be 3 in a few weeks and is perfect.

I could include dozens of other stories regarding prayer.

We can have a civil discussion, both sides can agree on that but let me ask you why you don't believe God exists?

I agree. This isn't Rivals. We can discuss this civilly.

I was raised in the church, but stopped believing after studying the origins of different religions.

The three major religions all have so many similarities that I was starting to think that maybe it was the same "god" for all of them and maybe the stories changed as people moved apart and spread over the world. After entertaining that thought for a little while, I looked deeper into it and realized that I was simply not a man of faith. I believe in what I can see and feel, and I have never seen the slightest sign to lead me to believe in a higher power.

I am one of few. I can admit that I have absolutely no idea how this world was created and I am ok with that, but I will side with something studied and a theory formed instead of something based on "faith" every time. I am amazed at the power of the universe and the power of our own brains. I can understand why many find this world hard to live in without creating something to believe in. I get it, but there's not enough evidence for me.

I am agnostic, not atheist. I have no problem admitting that I dont know if there is a god or not and I do not care in the slightest. A god, however, has nothing at all to do with religion. I can say Im not certain whether our universe has a creator, but I would bet everything on the fact that the story we know about jesus and the holy trinity is completely fictional. It is quite absurd and has been repeated throughout history well before jesus was even a thought. I added a picture to help (a little bit) to show how crazy I believe it is. EDIT: couldnt find the picture, sorry.

There has never once been evidence of a single prayer being answered in our world. Not one. People (a few of them are in this thread...mystical ultrasounds, etc) attribute random occurrences and coincidences as being acts of god when they are simply pat of our amazing world/universe or our powerful brains playing tricks on us.

This might come accross as me being a jackass, but why don't you believe Thor exists? Or Allah? Or Shiva? Or Krishna?

Honestly, that's why we don't think God exists. That's really the best way you can put it.
