Good beginners workout?

  • Getting shipping out to basics at the beginning of June, and was wanting to get it as much shape as I can so I can be at least a little prepared.

What is a good starting workout?

I am 6ft and weigh around 158 if that helps at all.

+1. Training specificity. This is all you will be doing in basic, so why would you train by doing anything else? Pushups, pullups, situps, and run. Every day.

It's all about heart rate fitness for you now.

Get some running or other aerobic activity in ASAP. Try to build up you heartrate endurance gradually by keeping it elevated for longer and longer periods of time in each workout.

As long as your heart and lungs are conditioned, you can make it through a workout without passing out, puking, etc. You may not be strong enough to do everything, but your failure will just be a particular muscle group and not your whole self.

It is probably too late to add any strength through weightlifting, but you can always give it a try too.

Great. Throw in some pushups/situps at the end of the run (maybe while you are stretching) and you should be good to go...

    Good luck!

    Ahh hell don't worry about.

Just run some so you don't get the shin splints and just some push-ups/sit-ups

Yes, yes you did. Hardly a point in spending time and energy physically preparing for Air Force basic.

Yes and run on soft surfaces if you can. I used to get shin splints from running on hard surfaces too much.

  • Just regular push-ups

Here is the test chart. You have to be a total fatass not to pass the Air Force requirements.

That is out dated....The new test is from 2011, the minimum for pushups for 29 and younger is 33, and for sit ups is 42. Since your weight is 158 for your height I'm guessing you won't have an issue for the minimum waist of 39 inches.

This. Do a lot of stretches, for every body part. Do literally every kind of push up, sit up, and pull up you can. I would do that kind of training 3 times a week and run 3 or 4 more. Maybe just 3 for the first couple weeks until your body adapts, and then don't take a day off. Swimming would benefit you as well. Mix all that crap up in a lot of different ways.

I am not in the military, but am gonna go in and have researched and talked to a lot of people so i figured i might could save you some research yourself. Good luck. Appreciate the service.

Edit: About the shin splits. I have read and been told a few different thing about that. Here is the way i look at it, I am gonna mix up running on soft and hard surfaces. I would rather know i get shin splints around my house than at boot camp where they will not give a rats butt. Also, go for a lot of hills and crap, don't pick the most flat and level ground you can find. Make everyday SUCK for yourself and you'll dominate any PT.

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

  • I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know anything about military conditioning, but I would recommend p90x. You can do it from the confines of your living room and it works great as long as you're willing to put forth the effort.

got any friends or family that has p90x?

if so borrow it and you wont believe how good it works...

about an hr a day x 6 days....tons of pull ups and push ups in this workout plus cardio and core/ab work...

had my wife try it, she could not do 1 push up (military style) when she started, after 2 months she could do 30 military push ups...

good luck, and thanks for serving!
