Good horror movies, not slasher trash.

  • Carrie, Halloween, The Exorcist, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, those are the classics. I have recently started re-watching them and they are really classics now. So much more normal and believable and down to Earth than what passes for horror today.

Everything has to be embellished so much nowadays, almost to the point of absurdity.

Give me the the late 70's and early 80's slashers and horror and forget the rest. Those old timers knew how to do it right. After re-watching those, delve into something like The Candy Snatchers and go full retro.

  • Of the newer horror titles, I enjoyed "The Strangers" for its very plausible scenario. Good flick, IMO.

Disagree. The horror movies today are much more believable than those made in the 80s.

I can't deny the terrible execution aspect. I agree on that premise. I am just all about the.. "Could it really happen." Just makes any movie scarier to me.. That's just me. though, maybe.

It's not just you, weGO. A successful movie that has any kind of long lasting appeal has to be at least somewhat believable, especially when concerning horror movies that are supposed to make you believe that it could really happen to you.

Where is the "gotcha" factor when 29 people have already been murdered within the first 5 minutes of the show? It's boring after that. Many producers today seem to believe that a lot of deaths = being scared. They have no imagination.

The times and the circumstances and the attitudes that enabled the great horror movies of the late 70's/ early 80's are gone forever. There is simply no way to recreate that. It can't be done because that time is gone forever.

  • Aright was gonna post this one as well just couldn't remember, "Creep Show", had like four mini movies in it. Know in one there was a big wooden indian statue that came to life after people robbed the store, I go to a bar that has a smaller indian statue in it, needless to say I dont play around with that!

  • I've mentioned it before, but you should watch "Tucker & Dale vs Evil" if you love those 80's flicks.

Actually, don't read about it. Just watch it out of the blue like I did. Best way to enjoy it.

  • Horror movies aren't scary anymore because we're desensitized. Most things have been done and there is more violence and gore in action movies.

Not scary, but a great movie for watching around Halloween is Trick R' Treat. Very similar to Creep Show in that it has 4 stories that are all linked.

  • Alien, The Shining, The Thing, The Exorcist, Psycho, and Silence of the Lambs are all classics. Films like Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and A Nightmare on Elm Street are all slasher movies. Classics, yes. Good movies, yes. Yet they are still slasher movies. The only real thing that sets them apart imo from those made now is that they were made when the slasher genre was really coming into its own and it was new. Personally I think that Saw was every bit as good as all those movies except Halloween. I would like to add that there have been some good horror movies made in the last decade......films like Frailty, The Mist, The Descent, 28 Days Later, Trick R' Treat, and 30 Days of Night (which in my opinion is one of the best vampire movies ever made). There are good ones out there- you just have to look (not unlike back in the 70', 80's, and 90's)

  • The Grudge should be on this list IMO, I know its not a classic but this movie scared the crap out of me when I saw it in the theaters.
