Got My First Boat Boyz

  • Haven't been on this board much lately, I gotta get over here more often but I figured I'd come over here and share this because I know there's some fishermen on here. My Grandfather decided to be an incredibly generous man, and bought me a boat yesterday. Without me knowing anything about it. 18 foot bass boat with about 3500 bucks of upgrades on it, 2 trolling motors, etc, the whole works. It's been stored since the day it was bought, so it's never been used before either. Now I can't EFFING wait to take it out this spring as soon as the lakes thaw out. Any advice from boat owners for a guy with his first boat?

dont forget the plug......you wouldnt think this would have to be said but i dont know any fisherman that hasnt made that mistake atleast once. dont forget you have a bilge pump on that one, you will need to pump it every 3 or 4 hours, or atleast you used to, i dont know how far basstrackers have come. take a bag incase anything breaks, it doesnt always happen but from time time you will find something isnt done right (especially on the older basstrackers, again none of my family has had one in years they might very well have improved). put toiled paper in a zip lock bag and put in a storage area, you wont regret this one. will you be putting it in by yourself? if so have you ever put a boat in by yourself? can be tricky

lol I'll try to remember that. A buddy of mine really tore his up last year going over some rocks. It was real bad.

on that note, go ahead and buy an extra prop and put it in the boat.....had one FALL OFF in the middle of the lake a few years ago...do you know how embarrassing it is to get towed in by a sail boat?

All very good advice. I've never put a boat in by myself before, but I also don't plan on taking the boat out by myself. I don't think I'll have a problem finding a buddy to come fishin with me on it. But, with that said, I also wouldn't be surprised if I ended up taking it out by myself sometime haha

lol No offense, but that's some funny stuff. I can't imagine how much that would suck, and then to top it off by being towed in by a sailboat, that's just great. Had to give ya an upvote for that.

ha one trick ive learned when going solo since that appears to be an aluminum hull , have a rope attached to the eye at the front of the hull, before you back in, tie the rope to the back of the trailer. back the boat in and when its deep enough hit the breaks to make the boat slide off the trailer then slowly pull forward pulling the boat back to the ramp. when doing this make sure the rope is good and you have good knots tied

haha trolling motor battery was dead and i was headed in when i saw a friend of mine in the middle of the lake on his sail boat, pulled up to talk to him, after about 30 min cranked the Yamaha 135 up and it didnt go anywhere. raised the motor to see if something was around the prop and it had dropped off in the middle of the lake haha

Now that's funny lol good advice on the extra prop though. Also, buy a bunch of shorty lifejackets to store somewhere on boar if u plan on taking out a few ppl, nothing worse than getting a ticket for not having enough life jackets

Yeah, that was going to be the first thing I bought. A good buddy of mine is a water patrol officer for the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources, so I'm sure he'll let me know if I'm missing anything that could get me a ticket, or anything that is essential on the boat. Although the tp in a plastic bag is a real good idea. I'm too lazy to look back and see which one of you recommended that lol

  • Congrats

I bought my uncles 22 ft. Bumblebee about two years ago and love the thing. Yours looks a lot newer than mine though. The only reason that my uncle sold it to me is because he won a brand new Ranger boat at a fishing tournament in a fvcking raffle.

  • Is that a 2 stroke? If so use the penzoil semi-synthetic blend. Best oil for the price, quicksilver is a rip-off and don't use generic. Also keep an extra spark-plug or two handy in your tackle box. Always make sure it starts before you take it to the lake lol, you can do that without hooking the hose up since you aren't running it long(just long enough to crank and run for a few seconds). I've got to the boat ramp and my boat not crank and its embarrassing.

  • Nice boat, congrats.

Like others have said make sure you do regular maintenance and you should be good to go.

  • Enjoy your time on the water my friend. I recommend that you make a checklist and go through it BEFORE you leave your house. Your checklist should include drain plug, hitch locked down, straps (on longer trips), and your fishing gear. Make a couple and laminate them. Place one around your fishing/boating gear and one on the visor of your vehicle. This is redundant, but go through your checklist again before you launch. Nice boat btw.

When I was younger I took my parents javelin and forgot the plug. Not too bad as long as you are moving lol

a buddy of mine took his jetski out, his dad had just worked on it and took the plug out so he wouldnt take it before making sure his dad was finished......sunk it

I knooow, it really sucks having to wait. I was already starting to get the itch to go fishing, because I don't do a ton of ice fishing. And now that I know I've got a boat, it just makes it that much worse. But thanks for the advise to everyone that chimed in, there's some good stuff on here. The checklist is probably a good idea, I can tend to forget little things sometimes.

  • Turns out, it's way nicer than I originally thought. We went to pick it up this morning. The guy we bought it from is a professional bass fisherman, sponsored by Hummingbird and Minn Kota. The first pics in the thread were the ones the guy put on Craigslist, here's a couple that I took today.
