I've been lucky enough to fish and visit more than a few beaches. None of them compare to Mobile Bay to Apalachicola. Some of the beaches on the East Coast has nice sand but the water is not as nice int he Atlantic. South of Tampa near Boca is the closest I have ever found. It's actually very close IMO.
California beaches can be nice, it's different, but a lot of them are too cold to even swim in.

I prefer beaches throughout the fingers in Michigan around Traverse City. They warm up nice in the bays and fresh water is much more enjoyable than sea water.
The nicest sand I've ever walked on was down in maybe Sarasota? It was like powder. So nice.

Depends what you're looking for. Cali has the best surfing, but is cold. the gulf coast of florida can be gorgeous but there aren't any waves and the water can get too hot. The Florida atlantic coast has a nice mix between the two, especially near cocoa.
My personal pick is Cali, but that could be because i've only been there for vacation
