Gulf beaches > California beaches

So you must be waiting tables while awaiting your big break. I guess there are those who can be fooled by the illusion of Hollywood and be tempted to move from the South. Good luck to you. Hope to see you on the silver screen someday.

No I actually work in the medical business making good coin... waited tables in Florida though (while in college)... Never claimed to live in LA but if that's the "illusion" you have about California then you're just as clueless as you come off sounding.

Hawaii beaches kick the s**t out of both and it isn't close. More watersports, better and bigger surf, better weather, clearer and cleaner water, and girls that know how to wear a brazilian bikini and not granny panties.

Haha. Take your dirty, black sand to a debate with someone from Carolina. You're not in the same league as either the Gulf or Cali beaches.

I have no illusions about Cali. The place just isn't that cool. I'm just trying to figure out what would make a person give up the South for that place.

If you think all of Southern California is L.A., then you clearly have not visited the area extensively. I live in an agricultural community, a small town of 12,000, the big club on our beautiful, Spanish style campus, was Future Farmers of America. Very conservative, majority church going folks, and tight knit community that watches out for it's neighbors. It is also located in one of the safest counties in America.

I've traveled all over the South, and I requested my native Nashvillian SIL to take me to all the little hamlets and small towns all over the south. The only difference that I have noted is..accents, the fact that we don't cook our vegetables to a gray mass with all that starch and fried food, we're 15 minutes from the beach, and I grew up with film crews shooting movies in my little town because it is so classic "small town America". We pretty much just ignored them and the actors that came here.

I don't think that's what he was saying at all. I think he was trying to explain why someone would prefer California to the South. At least, that's how I took it. You have to admit, it is pretty tough to figure out why someone who has experienced the greatness of this place would voluntarily pack up and move to a place like Cali.

My SIL is dying to come back to California, I'll have to ask him for starters. He was born and raised in Nashville, parents from Alabama and Mississippi.

I'm a California girl, through and through, but I can see the appeal of the South...and the Midwest, East Coast....and many other places I've enjoyed around the world.

    Weather: South >> Cali
    Women: South > Cali
    Food: South >>> Cali
    Beaches: South >> Cali
    Football: Alabama >>> Cali

I can't think of one thing I'd rank Cali higher in except degrees longitude. Gotta admit that they got us there. 120 > 85 every day if the week.

only one I can agree with is football.

    Hate fried/fatty foods.
Hot women from all over the world here.. not the case in most of the south.
See line above for beaches (plus no real waves in the south).

The highlighted part is key....why defensive?

We all love where we live and think it's the best place to do so, doesn't make it right for everyone.

That's all I was saying. I did enjoy visiting Cali several times and I'm sure I will be back, but it isn't a trip I will be planning just for the sake of going. It'll have to be for some specific reason like a game or a concert or something.

Weather: Cal in a landslide not even close (are you kidding me?)
    Morbid Obesity: South 'win'
    Racism: South 'win'
    Education Quality: Cal win
    Arts/Culture/Leisure Sports/Lifestyle/Diversity: Cal win
    CFB: South win
    Filthy, Filthy Hippies: Cal 'win'
    Clueless, self-absorbed a-holes: Cal 'win'
Dave Matthews D-Bags in shag haircuts: South 'win'
    Nancy Pelosi: South win
    Shreveport: CA win
    "Intelligent Design": CA win
Food: Push (Frankly I'll take a Mother's Debris sando in NOLA over French Laundry but CA has the best restaurants in the world)
    Women: Push
Beaches: Push (for the sake of argument)

I'm too lazy to tally the score but I think CA has a slight edge

Racism? No. People in Cali are at least as racist as the people here, probably moreso.

Weather? How can you say Cali has better weather when it is cold as hell most of the time? When I go to San Diego in September, I have to pack jackets and sweatshirts. That's a definite loss there.

    Uncle DP

  • Jackets in September? What are you 80lbs?

No, I'm just a fan of warm weather. Again, if you're from the Midwest, sure, Southern California has great weather, but when you're used to Alabama, it isn't really that good at all.

I guess you're a fan of rain and humidity too... not me..I'm a fan of mid to high 70s and sunny 90% of the year... souths weather sucks.

Fine. Lets just agree that Texas is the most racist and call it a push?

It really depends on how you define "cold". And it's funny that you choose SD as an example... San Diego is considered to have the best weather in the entirety of the United States. Meaning, there is no other city in America that has low humidity and averages more sunny 72-85 degree days. I don't have any statistics on hand but I've heard it so many times I'll just take it as truth for the moment. But to my girlfriend, who is from Jackson, Mississippi, anything below 82 degrees is freezing. I grew up just outside San Francisco where the weather is no where near as sweet as SD and I think I wore long pants five times in four years of high school. It's definitely relative, but good weather in my mind is moderate. 110 degrees in the shade with 100% humidity April-August is craptastic to me.

70 degree weather sucks. I can deal with a little rain and humidity to have warm weather from late February to late November or even December.

The first time I ever went to Cali was when I was 17. I just believed all the hype about the weather and took nothing with sleeves. It was September 2 and when I got off the plane in San Diego, the first stop I made was to buy sweat shirts and a jacket. I've been sure to pack them ever since.

No, Cal's weather is not awesome by any stretch of the imagination.

    Uncle DP

  • CA has Death Valley, that may be more your speed. Unfortunately not high on humidity. It's more of a dry heat
