Gun Control

  • captain brandon said...

Okay, for those who don't think gun control is needed, answer this,

What the helll does anyone need with the following, (full auto) AR-15s, AK-47s, MP-5s, Tech-9s, 30 round clips for handguns, fully automatic handguns, 100 round drum magazines?

Most of this was outlawed under the Federal Assault Weapons ban that expired back in 2004. If it had been extended the shooter wouldn't have had a full auto AK-47 or a 100 round drum mag for the AK. Far fewer would have been shot and killed, plus when he had to chance mags, people could've rushed him and taken him down.

Don't anyone say hunting either, I hunt and I've never needed any of those, if your that bad of a shot, you need to do somethine else.

To those who say that America is so great, yes we are a great country, but we've gotten too lazy, greedy and too sure of our selves. As much as I love our country, we've fallen behind Western Europe and most of the developed world..........for decades. Anyone that has traveled overseas knows this. Most teachers are there just for a pay check, our auto companies don't care about making great cars, just making them as cheap and quickly as possible, Most medical advancements today are happening overseas. Yes, we are falling behind, and it's not the government doing it, it our own lazy, quick fix, instant gradification way of life. Too many of us don't want to work hard anymore, we'd rather try to win the lotto, too many parents let a tv raise their kids.

If we want America to be great, great like it was from the 40s-70s we need to roll up our sleeves and do some real work, turn off the tv and take our kids outside and spend time with them, sit with them while they do their homework, teach them how to balance a check book and live on a budget (well some need to learn how to do it first). And, stop blaming someone else for everything..............................

    Rant over.

    says you with no rebuttal.....................

The "Federal Assault Weapons Ban" was nothing more than a feel good law that did nothing. They came up with an arbitrary definition of an "assault weapon" and banned it. Gun manufactures were then tasked with making guns that didn't look mean so someone could pat themselves on the back in Congress.

What you don't know about is there was the "Machine Gun Ban" of 1986 that is still in effect today. It banned civilians from the sale and transfer of full autos that were not registered by 1986. That means that the full autos people own are at least 26 years old and of finite amount. This has driven up the price into the tens of thousands range.

Now, because full autos are Class III weapons, you have to get a chief law enforcement officer in the county you live in to sign off on you buying one. Next you have to pay for a Federal Tax Stamp and send your paperwork to the ATF for approval. This is all after you perform the same background check for every gun you purchase.

  • Idiot liberals will never understand that the right to bare arms was created, regardless of the power of the weapon, for one main reason. If the government were ever to be as abusive as many of the governments seen in the European culture in the 18th century, then the citizens would have a right to revolt. Ben Franklin mentioned that it was the DUTY of the American citizen to rise up and revolt against injustices and infringement of any of our natural rights. These being rights protected by the Bill of Rights.

Also having the right to bare arms gives America the world's largest and most well-equipped militia in case of invasion. Considering militia is what built this country, I'd say thats also very important.

Liberals live in this make-believe world where human beings are naturally good and are not after anything besides whats best for themselves. If the world were perfect, things like Communism would work. But its human nature to always want more.

Okay, everyone has the right to own a gun, and that should never be taken away.

However it seems obvious to me, both as an ordinary American and victim of the Tuscaloosa shooting this week, we need more gun control.

    A) Require EVERY gun purchase, not just those from licensed dealers, to have a background check. Make owners who are selling notify a government body about who they are selling to do the gun is accounted for, or if that's too much then make selling owners go through licensed dealers to get the background checks and pay a small fee to the business for the privilege.

    B) Outlaw assault rifles. They are only used in these horrible shootings. You don't need it for self defense and the ease with which they can be altered to full auto as well as larger magazine size makes them ideal for shooters looking to cause terror.

    C) In the same way people have to be competent to drive cars, require people to pass a shooting, safety and knowledge test about guns if they intend to own one. That way they should know when, where, and in what situations they can discharge their weapons.

If you intend to get a gun for self defense you are acknowledging you will use deadly force to defend yourself if threatened- that is serious and should be treated as such.

Nope. You can never outlaw assault rifles. I already own one and it isn't going anywhere, ever.

They are used for many other things. I use them at the shooting range for entertainment and that is not illegal.

    Hippy.

Eliminating guns is never going to happen, but I would love to see some alternate proposals discussed. Anyone have thoughts on making ammunition really expensive? Say rubber bullets are cheap, but live ammo is very costly. This would allow people to still own guns (and have live ammo perhaps in their gun at home to protect from intruder, robbery, etc) but it would make it much more difficult to unload countless rounds in a shooting spree. What if a bullet was $100? What would that do to crime rates?

    LOL how stupid are you?

Why should I be punished because some guy shot up a movie theatre? I often go shoot 200-300 rounds at a shooting range. Does that bother you? Do you really feel that I should pay $100 a bullet?

    How dumb!

Bottom line is the highest court in the land has said as Americans we have the right to bear arms and no amount of wishing is going to change that. The debate should be over, the fight is for sure.

Not to make light of the situation, but I own a Walther P22(one of the VT shooters guns) which is chambered for the .22 LR caliber. I'm surprised he was as successful with it as he was. I can barely get through 3 magazines without a jam.

Don't tell some republicans or the NRA about that. They're all pretty convinced that Obama is hell bent on taking everyone's guns when in reality he's done nothing to make them think that and his actions actually show him to be pro guns.

Actually part of the problem is that when gun control comes up, people go crazy. The gun nuts in here overreact and instantly go 'Fox News told me THIS is how it starts!' before rejecting any changes to gun laws.

I never suggested taking guns away from everyone. I only suggested some changes to the ways people can obtain guns- one of which will prevent criminals from getting guns at events like gun shows.

And again, no one needs an assault rifle. Both of these recent attacks involved assault rifles because they have large magazines- and can be fairly easily adjusted to full auto I've heard.

And anyone who argues for keeping assault rifles in the hands of the public ignores the lives they take in attacks like this for their own selfish good time of shooting a few hundred rounds at the gun range.

Changing guns laws wouldn't have prevented what happened in Co. Criminals don't exactly line up to over spend at gun shows btw. It's much cheaper to buy a stolen one.

You are lashing out at assault rifles and blaming them for the death. The guy had a bomb in the theater and planned on blowing the place up. Also, the assault rifle jammed but he had 2 Glock .40 pistols and a shotty. You are blaming assault rifles but the deaths could have been from those. People who want to commit mass murder are going to find a way.

Also, full auto conversations, for most guns, aren't that simple IMO. You have to have gun smithing abilities to succesfully do the conversion.

Also, I do own an AR-15 just to be fair. I am looking for the link to back this up but assault rifles account for less 10% of firearm relate homicides. Pistols are the overwhelming majority. People don't ride around with $1,500+ AR's spraying innocent bystanders daily like some people want to make it sound.

Imo. The society should get to where its normal for everyone to carry and handheld weapon. This way the public can protect themself when some nut job tries to act out. It would less likely happen if everyone knew that around you everyone else was carrying a gun as well. The problem is most of these people go crazy and think they can succeed in murdering a bunch of people in a mass shooting because they know everyone else is helpless in the situation.

It's not that simple. There are a lot of differences between the USA and Europe that prevents you from making an apples to apples comparison of no guns = no crime. These are also relatively homogenous societies without the same social problems we have.

It doesn't matter bro. I've got 8 AR-15's and 3 AR-10's. I have probably close to 10,000 rounds of ammo. If you ever need one, I will let you borrow one or sell you one. No one is ever going to take our guns away and if they do, they wont find mine.
