  • This may be a stupid question, but if someone is standing on the first down line, wouldn't the laser stop there? can't go through a dude's foot.

    Would be awesome if they used a carbon dioxide gas based laser. Then, if someone put their foot on the line it would burn them. I'm not a sociopath. I promise.

  • Heard the same topic on Maddog radio.. I listen to that channel when I'm in my car. Can't remember the last time I tuned into espn radio. I love Maddog radio, they straight up tell it like it is and allow callers to call a ton. Dino is always good radio with his tirades. Chris "Maddog" Rousseau is a nut but highly entertaining and Bruce Murray in the am is a solid host.

    Espn has 2 hours of Cowherd, then friggin Pam Oliver and John Coachman (sooo bad), SVP is awesome though..

    Maddog is on xm 86, espn is xm 84.. I highly recommend MDR..

    Xm 87 fantasy radio is solid too

    Anyways, sorry about my mini rant

    My initial thoughts...

    - Unconsciously it will create many more opportunities for BIG HITS. Think about it. The players hit hard already, they bring it on every play and always have right? Doesn't matter, draw a line in the sand (like the laser) the whole world can see and watch what happens. That line is creating opportunities for someone's ass to get embarrassed and neither the ball carrier nor the defender wants that to happen. Think every play where a player steps out just short or every player who makes a first down by a foot, maybe both plays end differently if a line is drawn in the sand that everyone can see? That line represents the blood, sweat and tears those players and coaches have endured to become winners. Think about it....

    - Instant gratification, which has easily become the worlds top priority since the creation of the Internet. Receiving results in a matter of milliseconds not minutes. Good or bad, right or wrong, that's a beast we've all help create.

    - On the other hand, does this help or hurt accuracy of ball spots? You have to ask yourself, will that line cause a ref to mark a ball just short or just over the line at any point, for any reason other than being a man of integrity and honesty? Think about the first down call in the UM/SCAR game. Was he an idiot, wrong on his interpretation of the rules or did he have a hidden agenda? Will this visual line "increase or decrease" the opportunity for a hidden agenda? Just a thought....

    I haven't decided whether or not I support this idea, but I have no qualms about letting the game continue to evolve.
