Half-staffed for Whitney

A mom slammed the mayor for ordering flags half mast for a singer, giving her the same honor as her fallen Marine son.
Thoughts?

They should, but it is rare to see the flag at Half mast unless you are highly ranked in the military.

I think it depends on the town. My town is about 80,000 and orders half mast for ANY soldier/Marine that gives the ultimate sacrifice. Doesn't matter rank. That mom/family has every right to be irate at that mayor, IMO.

I know when I went to Atlanta for some training at Dobbins Air Force base they did not have the flags at half mast for one of the soilders who died in the Helicopter crash. They do shut down traffic though, and you are supposed to get out and salute the person who just died.

In MI the Governor declares a day where the flag is half-staff for every fallen MI soldier. We have a website where you can set up an alert so you know when to lower your flag. I call businesses that do not lower them on those days and boycott them if they continue to not follow flag etiquette.

I think you are misreading his post. It's not that the flag was lowered for Whitney...it's that it wasn't lowered for a dead soldier.
And you aren't really comparing Whitney to Elvis...are you?

A flag at half mast is just a symbolic thing anyway.... doesn't really mean anything as long as people feel what they want to feel.
If someone is upset about this person or that person passing, then that is all that should matter... why do they care what everyone else is doing?

He died at 42 from complications due to his drug abuse, her at 48 probably from an overdose.
Creative people make art and do drugs, and they die. Then America holds them on a pedal stool, as you are here with Elvis.
There just entertainers that made good music and died tragically. Fair comparison imo.

Where does is officially state that he "refused" to lower the flag for the soldier? He's lowered it every other time a soldier has died in the line of duty.

I honestly think that is a shame that we lower it for anything other person besides a soldier or someone who actually served their country. I do not hate Whitney or Elvis or anyone like that but why in the heck are we lowering a flag for them?
