  • It seems like every year it's the same exact shows during shark week. Anything different planned?

Thats pretty much my problem with it. I was infatuated with sharks most of my life, and shark week became a must see for me. That was, until I could watch it 10 straight hours and always know what was coming next.

Shark Week has been going on since at least the early 90s. It went to shit several years ago when everyone started watching it and Discovery decided to just replay the same segments over and over again. Maybe it was like that when I was a kid but back then I felt like every year it was new/different.

Part of it is once they have a really good film on X behavior in Y shark, they don't bother trying to get it on film again...or at least not to that extent. I understand that to some degree. It's not like they're going to find one with retractable legs that walks into a bar in the Carribean and orders a Fosters. On the other hand, since it's such a big draw, there are so many other angles they could take. I understand the infatuation with Great Whites, but I like the deep sea sharks and the weird sharks and the polar region critters. Every year, there are dozens of shark attacks of some kind. Even so, it's more likely you'll be struck by lightening than to be a victim. So I'd like them to give circumstances around sharks attacks each year. They're maybe all similar, but they are all unique incidents.

Sorry...I started rambling without thinking it all the way through. But I would be interested in the small things just as much as the 50th airing of Air Jaws.

I completely agree. Great Whites skying out of the water is awesome, but where's the love for all of the other sharks? It seems when I was a kid they had shows on Thresher sharks, Whale sharks, Hammerheads, Tiger sharks, etc. These days it seems its always the Great White or the Bull shark getting all the love. And if they are just going to do reruns then dig deep and find some of those old re-runs that people havent seen every year for past 5 years.

I am looking forward to the show on Megalodon tomorrow night though. Charleston (where I'm from) was once a breading ground for Megalodon and you can still find the teeth all over the place here.

I'm fascinated with Megalodon myself. Obviously it's hard to come up with anything new on them since they've been gone so long, but it's still fascinating to me. I haven't really made a bucket list, but I believe I'm going to have to add diving with different types of sharks. It might need to be the last item on the bucket list if I'm to dive with Whites and Tigers. biggrin
