That's utterly ridiculous to pay any coach that. If they offer that to Saban, he should take it.

Yeah 15 million is just stupid. Coach for two years, get fired, and then you could still come get basically any college job.

No NFL team would offer that.

I agree with this statement. He wasn't the "failure" in the NFL some painted him out to be. He went 9-7 in his first season after the Dolphins went 4-12 the year before...a 5 win improvement. He then wanted to sign Drew Brees as his QB but the doctors wouldn't clear him so he got stuck with Daunte Culpepper and ended up also using Joey Harrington and Cleo Lemon...nobody was going to win with those guys at QB. So, they went 6-10. It's also not like anybody else has been able to win with the Dolphins since Marino retired. One good season and one bad season with no QB doesn't a failure make.

I'm not saying Saban would definitely crush it in the NFL but I think he's more of an unknown than a failure. I think he would ultimately succeed in the league though. Either way, we'll never know because he isn't going anywhere.

And add to it that they went 1-15 the year after he left.

I don't consider him an NFL failure either. He coached two years. Pick any coach out there and you can find two years that have a one good year and one bad year.

I think if he went back he'd likely do well....as long as he stuck with it for at least five years.

I agree. People don't really look too much at why he left. It wasn't because he was a failure. The Dolphins wanted to throw more money at him to stay, but that franchise didn't sit well with him. He wanted Brees, only to be told he couldn't have him and to watch him become one of the best QBs in the game that year. He was forced to take Culpepper, who fumbled his way to the bench in favor of 2 guys that wouldn't have made many team's practice squad.

Then when you look at his life, he grew up in West Virginia, went to school in Kent, OH, coached in Kent (5 years), Syracuse (1), Morgantown, WV (2), Columbus, OH (2), Anapolis, MD (1), East Lansing, MI (5), Houston, TX (2), Toledo, OH (1), Cleveland, OH (4), East Lansing again (5), Baton Rouge (5), Miami (2), and now Tuscaloosa (6).

Miami is a very different city than the rest of those. I am not sure he and his family were ever really happy there and with 2 kids that were teenagers at the time, I am sure a smaller town seemed more appropriate.

Something tells me that he may one day return to the NFL, but I don't think it will be to build a franchise. If he does, it may be to replace someone stepping down, instead of someone being fired.

His son (who just got married this past summer) and daughter, who are both adopted, are still young. His daughter has another couple of years of college and I would think that when she finished, options involving the NFL or even retiring in full may become more real.

I got my Master's at Wisconsin, but that was almost 2 decades ago. I have been back a couple of times. Love Madison, but I can agree with you a little bit about the fans there. They weren't bad when I was there, but since Alvarez built them up, they did seem more obnoxious when I went back.

That's to be expected though. Kids that have been getting beat their entire life finally get a chance here and there to throw it in someone's face and they're going to take their shot while they can.

Florida fans were the same way in the 90s. Now, they are for the most part a great group of fans.

Born in California actually. Moved to Bama as a child and went to Alabama. Dad loved Alabama from grad school (he did undergrad at Southern Cal) and wanted to move back. Only went to Wisconsin for a year to get my Master's.

12 million seemed WAY to excessive. Especially seeing that Payton is the highest paid coach in the NFL at 8 million a year.
