Heisman race historic, and maybe historically close

1:27PM EST December 4. 2012 - The Heisman Trophy race is shaping up to be one of the closest in the award's 78-year history.

On the day the Heisman Trust announced Texas A&M redshirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel, Notre Dame senior linebacker Manti Te'o and Kansas State senior quarterback Collin Klein as the three finalists for the award, the final survey of 37 USA TODAY Sports Media Group voters Monday revealed a dead heat between Manziel and Te'o.

Manziel received 85 points in the final survey compared to 84 for Te'o. Klein was third with 36, the only other player with a two-digit point total.

  • It's ridiculous Teo is anywhere close to Manzell. There are more than a few LB's in the SEC with better stats than him. He needs to GTFO. But this is the same group that voted Charles Woodson over Peyton manning. Too many concussions in that room IMO

  • There are LB's all over the nation that had a better year than Teo. He has no business being a finalist. Its between Klein and Manzeil.

The Butkus and Nagurski voters disagree. Name one linebacker that even came close to Te'o in interceptions.

  • USA today poll consisted of voters mostly from Midwest and northeast. Their poll isn't sampled accurately and not a true reflection of where the race stands.

Didn't know interceptions were the only part of football.

He won because he plays on a highly overrated ND team that will get throttled in the NC game. Alabama is no Pitt. Alabama is a little better than Purdue. Alabama would make BYU cry before halftime. ND needed overtime and had to pray for a missed field goal. Teo is a product of the Notre Dame name. A name that hasn't meant much in the last 24 years.

University of Notre Dame senior linebacker Manti Te'o was honored with the 28th annual collegiate Butkus Award Monday. The announcement came in a surprise telephone call by legendary linebacker and award namesake Dick Butkus and his son Matt. A presentation is planned for December 17 on the Notre Dame campus as part of an I Play Clean workshop series.

    - Te'o was selected by a panel of 51 coaches, recruiters, scouts and journalists coordinated by Pro Football Weekly.

    - Te'o has recorded seven interceptions in 2012, which is tied for second in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total interceptions. He has set a Notre Dame single-season record for most interceptions by a linebacker. In fact, no FBS linebacker in the past 11 seasons has collected more single-season interceptions than Te'o. He has generated nine total turnovers (seven interceptions and two fumble recoveries), which is tied for the most of any FBS player. Te'o has actually played a role in 11 of the 23 turnovers forced by Notre Dame's defense in '12. In addition to the seven interceptions and two fumble recoveries, he has hurried two quarterbacks on plays that directly resulted in interceptions.

-Te'o already became Notre Dame's 186th All-American first team selection (AFCA). A National Scholar-Athlete by the National Football Foundation and finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Nagurski Award, Lombardi Trophy, Maxwell Award, Bednarik Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year and Lott Trophy.

Another big batch of votes, and the Aggies' Johnny Manziel keeps on hangin' on. I'm aware that there are Notre Dame and K-State fans that are claiming this site is

When Herschel didn't win it as a freshamn, I never thought any freshman would ever win it. I was wrong. Johnny Football is something else.

Or do I just speak common sense? There are better linebackers that had better seasons in college football that aren't up for the Heisman. Is that true or false?

  • Do domers really believe that Teo is worthy of winning the Heisman? Do they believe he's the best defensive player in the country? Hell, he's not even the best player on that D.

And yet I still don't think he's the most outstanding player in college football. The 9 TO's is impressive, but not as impressive as 43 TD's and 4600 yards imo.
