  • Haha the old British would think they were cowards hiding like that. You aren't a man unless you stand in a straight line in the middle of a field.

It wasn't bad before flight made bombs possible. Sure beat getting shot at ala the Civil War, but it also brought us chemical warfare, so that suck.

Would have completely driven me crazy though to just sit there, but I am sure any combat like that would make you crazy.

Simply put, it was a product of the weapons of the time, machine guns and massed artillery barrages, without a way to overcome them in a mobile fashion.

    This.

How much worse would it be to just have to stand there and reload while some hurried to shoot you first. Also, the bullets wouldn't even kill you. You died of infection and lead poisoning days late in a lot of cases. Give me a bayonet to the chest any day over that.

  • After 1000s of men ran head strong into a wall of other men wielding swords and bows/arrows, trench warfare was a God-send.

MSU isn't a very good football program.. takes year of consistent winning to get to that level. - copemoney 1/22/13

Exactly. It is all a matter of perspective.

  • Just evolution of warfare. At that time mobility was not great but fire power started to get great. With machine guns and repeater rifles armies couldn't line up. How stupid would troupe feel in the 1700s line up against each other a few yards away and shooting muskets?

  • Well... I know the Napoleonic form of walking in a tight line was to increase firepower, however you were going to die.

Trench Warfare was the nastiest form eva

  • I agree with most other people in this thread. It was simply a product of the time. It beat standing in a line and getting absolutely destroyed but it also brought forth the age of chemical warfare. We can look back now and be like WTH I would never do that lol

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

  • Confederate General Longstreet pleaded with General Lee to use trench warfare more often rather than the volley lines that had been used for a couple of hundred years due to the inaccuracy of the musket. Weapons became much more accurate with the advent of the rifle coming into play on the battlefield in the Civil War - fatalities were much higher per capita due to that and trench warfare was seen as a way to provide better defense and loss less people....Trenches were used but not to the level as used in the Civil War.

    Ok... class over...

Since most people died in a split second rather than dying of scurvy, ganggreen, and rodent diseases....
