    RIP, Hitch.

Not a fan of Hannity at all. Hitchens chewed him up and spit him out more times than I can count yet the moron kept inviting him back.

His writing and many debates are where the real treasure of his brilliance can be found though, not in the media. The acceptance of the Richard Dawkins Freethinker of the Year Award last year was heartbreaking and moving.

All that said, this was more of a joke after seeing yet another multiple page God thread where christians claim atheists are taking over the world, trying to force their beliefs down everyone's throats. Clearly, that's not reality, but their twisted 'whoa is me' version of reality. It's a bit tired.

Hitchens, author of God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, and most recently of Arguably: Essays by Christopher Hitchens, was presented with the Richard Dawkins Freethinker of the Year Award by Dawkins himself. Dawkins is the bestselling author of The God Delusion and The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True. Though Hitchens suffers from esophageal cancer, he and Dawkins spoke and took questions for about an hour in front of a crowd of what appeared to be well over a thousand people. In introducing Hitchens and presenting him with the award that bears his name, Dawkins said that the old religious line that there are "no atheists in foxholes" is disproven daily by Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens is dying and he knows it, but stares reality in the eye without blinking, Dawkins said. Hitchens' speech did not disappoint. He talked about his illness and noted that over the last year, he'd been coming to Houston regularly for treatment, presumably at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He was emphatic that he wouldn't stop doing his best to shed light on the fraudulent claims made by religion, a line that brought the crowd to its feet.*

  • It is sort of ironic the god-like status this guy was able to achieve.

    huh

So people admiring a writer and/or enjoying his debates means he achieved "god-like status"? Hitchens himself would be offended by that snide remark, forget the rest of us.

Maybe not by you, but by many people, yes. I know that would offend him, which is why I said it was ironic. I really didn't intend it to be snide. I feel it's reality.

  • I discovered who Christopher Hitchens was when I was reading Paine's, The Age of Reason. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant thinker, debater and master of linguistics.

    RIP

  • My personal favorite commenter on the subject is Stephen Fry. I love his Intelligence Squared debate.

  • I was always a huge Dawkins fan since I have a background in science, but I got Hitchens' "Arguably" for Christmas this past year, and his prose is so much more sharp than Dawkins. I love Dawkins for the science, but Hitchens' style and ability to construct a convincing argument are just so far above not only other humanists, but most other writers in general.

Dude, Craig is literally on another level; the guy is absolutely brilliant. And I'd also argue that Hitchens never came close to beating Craig in a debate.

So, I'm going to assume you were playing.

Agreed, Craig is brilliant. Disagree that Hitchens never came close to beating him in a debate though.

    D'Souza is a joke.

When I typed that I had no one in specific in mind, but Lennox came to mind when I read your response. Rabbi's Shmuley (though irritating), Wolpe, and Shavit also provided strong arguments when debating Hitchens, Dawkins, and Harris.

While I may disagree with many of his opponents, I cannot reasonably say the vast majority were unintelligent. They weren't up on stage for being imbeciles. It is important to recognize that most of the planet will look stupid when standing next to such a superior mind.

His final appearances were, in my opinion, the most powerful and the most impressive. Dawkins is a "super intellectual" but I don't think even he could hold a candle to what Hitchens brought to his writing and debate.
