Honest question for the board...

If the ball is put in Denard's hands often, and by in his hands I mean designed runs, i wonder how well he holds up for 4 quarters. Bama tends to make QB's pay physically on designed runs and historically they haven't held up very well. If he starts getting punished I wonder if that will make him hesitant to run and/or have any affect on his throwing ability. Hopefully you Michigan guys could give me some insight here.

He will probably get about 8-10 designed runs, it when he does his own thing is when I worry.

If he stays in the pocket, he is 10x more dangerous than when he rolls out because he can make the defense stay honest when he is in the pocket since he can take off at any time or pass the ball.

#1 is the biggest factor. If Bama can pound to rock at 4 or 5 yards a clip, Michigan is done. If Michigan's defense can get the ball back to Denard, he will find a way to get into the endzone.

See, and I am leaning to #3. The defense, especially the back 7, is long on physical ability and short on experience. If they cannot correctly diagnose what Michigan is trying to do with DR it could be a tough night. From my perspective, I hate this matchup being the first game of the season with us having so many guys in new roles. These guys have all played snaps before but it's completely different when you are now "THE GUY."

Oddly enough i fully expect Bama's game plan to consist of making DR stay in the pocket and beat us with his arm. The big thing for us is not overpursuing when we do bring pressure and giving DR running lanes. That has been our gameplan against that type of offense for the most part.

I would not be surprised at all if Moseley is used as a spy on DR. He's our fastest and most athletic linebacker.

The QB spy used to work very well against Denard, but with a true running option in Fitz Toussaint, it doesn't work like it used to. I wouldn't be surprised to see Borges go more spread offense verses a pro style offense during the Bama game so Denard has more options to throw to and do more option plays like they did against Nebraska and Ohio State.

Overall though, if Denard can't make the throws (I expect him to be fine with the passing game) then it's going to be a long game.

Any Michigan fan will tell you he is a better pocket passer than he is passing on the run.
This game is definitely going to be a fun one to watch.

If Toussaint gets suspended, will he run option with Vincent Smith you think?

I don't get the feel Fitz will miss the Bama game, his charge isn't big and he's a first time offender. I think a suitable punishment would be missing a week or two of practice and extra laps/stairs/sled pulls until the end of the season.

But if he is suspended I think he would run option with Rawls because he is more of a true RB. Smith is a 3rd down back and great screen pass option, but not a good every down back.

Never said any of those things. Good job putting words in someone's mouth.

Not sure you know what you were trying to say either. It's not what you said, it's what you implied.

Your win vs LSU in the CG was not a great display of defense. It was a great display of two inept offenses. Hence the "yawn fest" remark. The rest of the country felt the same way based on the ratings.

Not to defend an SEC team or anything (sarcasm), but I think it was just great defense, not bad offense.

LSU put up some pretty impressive points against a number of opponents not named Alabama.

Vice-versa, Alabama had a couple of pretty nice offensive displays against opponents not named LSU.. ('cept the NC)

Rewatch that game. It was full of unforced errors from lsu. Dropped passes/missed wr/wrong read galore. Just atrocious qb play.

    Good defense? Absolutely.
    Completely inept offense? Absolutely.

Don't forget lsu made a living off of turnovers all year. If you hold onto the ball against them in 2011 and make their offense work you put yourself in good position.

It actually only matters if he throws off his back foot ... I think I have seen him do that more in the pocket than not. When he has a good throwing motion and steps into the throw, he throws a really good ball regardless of what others say. He definitely needs work on his deep ball though.

Yeah i am. the question was who could stand up to LSU or Alabama. i stated we could, the talent is there, we can match up athletes with them. i dont really see what is so funny. what do expectations have to do with it? we know auburn cant go toe to toe with them. you couldnt go toe to toe with us. we do a home and home and i guarantee we beat you and auburn buys out of the series.........again

no auburn fan can EVER talk shit to an FSU fan with a straight face. you bought out of a series, thats the weakest move you can make

We own the series you idiot, and you can't even win the weak ass ACC. I have watched your team live for the last three years, so I know exactly what you have, and it ain't s#it. You would get mopped with any top tier SEC team. Would love to see you in bowl season. And I'll be at the Miami game to watch y'all barely squeak by a depleted Miami squad, I'm sure you will take pride in that.

I stated earlier in the thread that LSU and USC will play for the title this season, in my opinion.

I decided to look up some offensive stats, since our offense was obviously inept last season, and compare them with USC.

    2011 Total Offense
USC 456.8 yards per game, good for 21st Nationally
Alabama 429.6 yards per game, good for 31st Nationally

However, Alabama had more total yards for the season outgaining USC 5,585 to 5,481.
Also, keep in mind Alabama played 8 teams in the Top 50 in total defense compared to USC's 4 teams.

    2011 Scoring Offense
USC 35.8 points per game, good for 16th Nationally
Alabama 34.8 points per game, good for 20th Nationally

Alabama scored more total points for the season 453 to USC's 429.

After looking over all of the data from last season, it looks to me like Bama and USC were on the same level last season in the offensive department. If Bama's offense was inept then so was USC's.

You also played Kent St, Northern Texas and FCS school Georgia Southern at home.

That alone would help any statistical comparison.

  • Preseason, I think LSU, Bama, and USC are the best 3 teams, but let's stop acting like they're superteams that are unbeatable. It's very rare that the season goes as you expect. All teams are vulnerable. LSU has an unknown at QB. Bama is replacing a lot. USC is thin on the DLine.

Any one of these teams can, and probably will, be beaten. The unpredictability is what make college football awesome.
