As a wise man once said. That's just the way it is, somethings will never change.
Only thing worse is someone who goes to a rival school, for example a UM fan going to MSU or a Aubrun fan going to Bama. Make me sick to my stomach.

    Noww THAT is unexceptable.

Yeah that's infuriating. I had an Auburn fan in my fraternity at Alabama and although we are friends, it's very difficult to have the same level of respect for him that I do for others.

  • I won't be attending the university of Maryland but I still love their teams. I've spent so much time watching their teams and going to their games. Also a great sense of state pride.

I won't stop rooting for them. Might not be a super fan but still like the team. I wouldn't flash it or wear any gear while at another college though.

It's about having pride in something you were actually a part of. Your parents went to school X and you grew up rooting for them? Your parents are part of that community. You aren't and never will be. You weren't a part of that. Again, that's what pro teams are for. College teams are for people who went to that college OR people who didn't go to school at all / went to school with no sports but grew up in the region.

Hate to break the news but you and your friends date raping chicks at the frat castle doesn't get you a championship ring, you're not a part of that either.

Sure, I didn't see the field. I took classes with the players, paid my tuition to benefit the institution that allows football to exist, etc. I never said I was a part of the team. But I am a part of the University, and believe it or not, the football team is only a small part of that. The titles wouldn't be possible without the people that make up the University. Sure the t-shirt fans provide valuable revenue, but it would all be worthless if not for the underlying institution that is the University itself.

How much of a part if the community were you, though? You took classes, paid tuition, and I'm sure enjoyed the city as much as we all did. But was that it? What about clubs or professional organizations? Events? Supporting other sports? Other student groups? Did you catch a concert at Moody? Attend a Guerrilla Theatre? Call into 90.7? You get the idea.

Just being at a school doesn't make you part of it. Being a part of it makes you a part of it.

And for the record, I'm not calling you out, as I don't know your answers to the above questions.

Well now we're having a different discussion. I made the post you quoted in reference to someone saying I wasn't on the national championship team. That's a very different debate than the "being a fan of a school you didn't attend" debate. I just want to be clear which one you're asking about before I respond because there are two different answers.

FWIW, I did take part in many on campus organizations, other sports, etc

Not really. Disliked Michigan for most of my life, but was more concerned about the sports I was playing than the college ones until I was about 15-16.

  • And again, I'm sure I sound like the typical "you didn't go here so don't cheer for my team" prick. But that's really not what I'm saying. If you didn't go to college, if you went to a school with non-existent or D3 level sports, if you work as a janitor for your school, etc... I totally respect that. The thing I don't respect if someone goes to Alabama but is a Duke basketball fan. They go to Colorado but they're a USC football fan. They go to Duke but they're an Alabama football fan.

  • Rooting for a school you didn't go to when you are a student or alumni of another school is like jerkin' it to a picture of your high school sweetheart while making your wife watch. Some people may be into it. I think it's weird.

It is an irrelevant debate because it's not a debate. And there is nothing "new" about my love for MSU. And you haven't bled for any team. You went to a store and put a t-shirt on. Good job. You have no connection to that team.

But that's the thing. Being a fan of something from age 1 to 16 isn't "bleeding something your whole life". It's a childhood passion: people grow out of those when the have their own lives. Going to a major university is starting your own life. Embrace that community and live it through and through. Like I said, I liked Texas football because my Dad went there. I got plenty worked up when we were at the Rose Bowl and Texas played USC. But once I reached the age of making my college decision and decided that wasn't the route I wanted to take, I disengaged. I went to Alabama and dove in head first. Because it is MY SCHOOL. I'm a part of it. I'm not a part of Texas. Someone in my family was. Being a fan of something when you're 16 doesn't mean jack.

    FortWorthTide

  • Going to college is a business decision, nothing more nothing less. If your parents were fans or legacies and then it was your one goal to get into that 1 school then sure, be happy about it. Neither of you have described that scenario so the 3 of us all just paid for a piece of paper, now you get bonus scout points for school spirit and pep but it is what it is. I love CofC and I plan on living in Charleston for as long as I can but nothing you two say with a false sense of conviction will convince me to think otherwise about Notre Dame.

  • If the school you went to is playing the school you grew up rooting for you should root for your alma mater but if they aren't playing eachother I don't see why u can't root for the team you grew up rooting for.
