How can you be ranked above a team that just beat you?

  • I keep hearing analysts and talking heads bashing the computers and I think

TAMU beats Bama at Bama and they are still ranked below them

Stanford Beats Oregon at Oregon and they are still ranked below them

I realize there are other factors that punish the Stanford and TAMU by losing earlier, but it seems the team ranked higher does not pay as big of a penalty.

The AP and Coaches poll are ranking the teams this way....

Are there other non-playoff sports where you prove you beat an opponent yet you are ranked below them?? I assume Golf is one and maybe Boxing?

Really - it works that way in the Championship?

Yep. Think I'll spend a few more hours in the day looking stuff up about it.

It's true. That's because the two teams in the championship are supposed to be relatively equivalent in terms of the big picture.

Just because that's how it's done doesn't mean it's 100%. There's a million examples of teams beating other teams that are better. It's almost always due to the better team losing the turnover battle.

And no, I'm not saying that losing the turnover battle automatically makes you a better team. But look at Alabama - they lost the game by a measly 5 points with a -3 turnover margin. If things were even (0 turnover margin), who do you think would win? I'd say Alabama.

For the most part, I'd agree. Especially if the opinions are relatively ignorant.

  • Yep. You have a point. TAMU beat BAMA so they should be ranked ahead of BAMA. LSU beat TAMU so LSU should be ahead of TAMU. BAMA beat LSU so BAMA should be ahead of LSU.....uh wait a minute....this isn't making sense.

Should NC State be ranked above FSU? They did beat them... but, you know, they also have like 5 losses compared to FSU's 1.

Reading comprehension - I said right after.

It debunks the whole - if you are going to lose - lose early theory...

  • How can you tell anyone that k-State is a better football team than Baylor???

    Yet they are ranked higher?

A&M had 2 losses when they beat us. I'm not saying we shouldn't have fallen further or that they shouldn't have risen more, but do you rank a 2 loss team over a 1 loss team?

This is the only appropriate response IYAM. OP's team is #1 in the country for the first time in 20 years and these are the thoughts filling his head?

Serious? Maybe because Stanford and aTm have 2 losses versus only 1?

Good point, but should you fall further for losing to a two loss team...at home? Honest question, no rivalry mess. Personally I think the entire ranking system is bunk and would love a true play off system. JMHO

  • A better question would be how far would Alabama have fell after losing to a 2 loss team that wasn't in the SEC? My guess is a little further than 4.

We fell from 1 to 4 and Oregon fell from 2 to 5... Sooo, probably the same distance if that 2 loss team was Stanford, amirite?

We could also bring up our best win vs Oregon's, but that would bring too much logic to this thread.
