How come Cincinatti does not have pro basketball

  • Cleveland has a team in all three of the major American sports, but cincinatti does not.

They used to have the Royals IIRC.

  • It's weird. St. Louis doesn't either. Nor Seattle. But there are teams in Sacramento, Oklahoma City, and Salt Lake City. And the owners wonder why they're losing money.

I'm pretty sure the hemorraghing clubs weren't OKC or SLC (maybe SAV). Cleveland, New Orleans---all bigger cities---had problems, too. One could argue that bigger cities have more clout in the higher revenue TV contracts, but where teams were losing money was not in market locations, but player contracts. There was an arms race in the last decade that overinflated many salaries (Baron Davis was making $15M/yr at one point).

I believe the new owners of the sonics wanted to move to Oklahoma city because financial problems in Seattle. I know it pissed off Gary Payton and a lot of the Seattle residents when the team left

The problem with teams like SAC, SLC, OKC, and NOH (and Minnesota and Portland to a lesser extent) is that they don't have nearly as many fans to watch on TV or "travel" to road games. They do great when they're at home, so it's good for their home market, but they don't contribute to the health of the league at large.

And OKC was the better option at that time for that ownership group. I would contend, however, that it isn't nearly as viable as a long-term option. It's worked because the team has been young and exciting, but if they had gotten stuck with Greg Oden then Michael Beasley, then Hasheem Thabeet (instead of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden), that franchise might be on life support right now.

A crappy fanbase of a crappy team in a large market contributes as much as a good fanbase of a good team in a medium-sized market.

Sure, but the larger market has a lot more room for growth than the smaller market.

True, but market demographics change over time as well and I know in a place like OKC the team is a part of a larger plan of market growth for the city itself.

Columbus has 3 times as much land as Cincinnati or Cleveland but has a smaller metro population than both.

  • I am surprised there hasnt been a bigger push to get a team in columbus. The arena is already there. The problem is most people I know in Cincinnati and columbus (more so Cincinnati) couldn't give a rats ass about the NBA. I am the same during the regular season but love the playoffs.
