not sure what it was, haven't seen it in a while, but remember, there is something about the water. in the initial scene, the guy is sitting in a chair and when it goes haywire, he falls backwards into the tub full of water and wakes up. it was their alarm clock or something. i don't remember why, but maybe that's it, the water is the key and since the car flips, not sure that matters..

never figured that one out as well ?? i searched a couple of sites to try and find an answer at the time i was trying to figure it out and never came up with anything that made sense

They have pretty much admitted that the whole thing was not a dream.

Even in the credits there we two different sets of actors that play the children at different ages.

Maybe, I watched it once and that iss how I came away from it. Too many things lined up for me in thinking it was a dream.

I will watch it again at some point and maybe get a different view buts that's one of those movies that is really good if you only see it once

This. There was a certain time before they could be woken up via kick because of the sedative.

When they "leave it open to interpretation", that just means that they F'd up and made mistakes in the story. I hate that.

I don't think it was a dream either. He never sees his children's faces in his dreams...that's a big theme of the whole "dream vs. reality" thing. At the end of the movie, he gets to see their faces and hug them and everything.
