How do you like to get your entertainment and news?

  • I was thinking about this while binge-watching "House of Cards" on Netflix. It was odd to me to be given an entire season of television to watch without any commercials, time-lag etc. I like it.

So tBB, post your age and whether or not you like having traditional cable/satellite or paying for services like Netflix/Hulu/HBOGO and watching at your leisure and ad free? Also, do you do this for news? Subscribing to a few online services with WSJ/NYT or do you watch cable news and get your local paper?

Lastly, would you be willing to do with for all types of entertainment and news including music and sports etc.?

I have most of all of them except for Netflix- after they pissed everyone off. I do it out of convenience, really. I never watch much TV. Like right now, Platoon is playing on demand but I'm not watching it I'm reading the Blue Board debating to go running in the rain or not. I will mainly tivo a lot of basic cable just to have it and I may end up watching like 10% or so. So I wouldn't pay for that til football season. Seriously, football season is the only reason I have basic cable. Most every show I watch comes on the movie channels except for like the Walking Dead, rerus, and shows on Nat Geo. And I could do without all of them if I had to.

Netflix is not on demand enough. I know it's only a day in the mail, but it's still a day. When I want to watch a movie I want to watch it then or the mood passes me. Tomorrow I might not even be home. And I know you can watch them instantly from your computer, I have done it, but that's just for watching it by yourself. Hard to watch a move with the girlfriend on the couch with a hot ass computer on your lap. And even then it's hard to keep my attention on a small screen that long. I have to get up and do something.

So basically, if we can bundle tbb, BOL, email, my fishing blog, and the movie channels on demand, then we they can keep everything else. No radio, land-line, post office, dvd shipping, basic cable, texting, facebook, twitter, etc....take it all. Do not want.

I have UVerse and also have Netflix (2 movies out at a time on Blu Ray and Instant). I get most of my news on my phone and do not get the paper. If there was a way to stream all football games online and get it on my TV I would pay for that and ditch UVerse and get a Hulu account.

  • I heard Netflix is thinking about making a premium service that allows all the content that is mail online to be streamed for a higher priced (speculatively $20/m) because of the possibility of losing days in the week to USPS delivery cancellation.

This would be awesome and I would pay probably more than $20 a month for such a service if it was true. I doubt they can do it though. HBO has their own streaming service. Their contract with Showtime didn't get renewed with Instant I don't think either. That's just the TV shows as well. I see no way where Weinstein and all of the other movie studios allow all of their films to be streamed online unless Netflix pays them out the butt. Netflix also just spent $100M on original programming.

  • Side note: You want to see a shit storm? Wait til you have a girlfriend that watches some show like the Kardashians or something on E. She will click "record all new shows" on the TV at your place just in case she is over there when it comes on. Then you break up with said gf and a year later, with a new gf, that show pops up again on record and she wants to know what girl is coming over watching TV with you. lol. Fvck my life

This is when I'm at my apartment which is 95% of the time during the school year. I have cable and all the sports packages at home.

Every TV show for free: http://www.btvguide.com/
    Every movie for free: http://www.movie2k.to
    Watching live sports: http://www.firstrow1.eu/

If I want to watch sports on my TV I just run a HDMI cable or a Smart TV works too.

News I get from NYT.com and CNN.com and ESPN.com for sports.

3 kids 4th on way. Haven't watched a "live" TV show outside of sporting event in 5+ years. DVR a lot of TV series and watch them after kids in bed. The positive is i do get about 2+ hours a day of kids shows/cartoons. They're not as good as they used to be though. Although phineas and ferb is pretty good ill admit. I have satellite and all the movie channels but usually don't have time to watch movies with the backlog of TV shows recorded
Still get the paper delivered but haven't read it in about 2 years. Usually the local news is last thing I watch on the DVR before we go to bed. Outside of that I usually am browsing on my iPad while watching TV.

  • Television has become useless to me for everything except sports and live news. But frankly I read the news more than watch it these days. TV is just a rip off and it pisses me off that I have to pay for it every month just to watch sports. During a week I might watch actual television about 3 hours MAYBE.

I watch a lot of TV shows online all the time though, most from illegal free sites. And I don't feel the least bit bad about it, industry does everything it can to make it difficult and expensive to watch shows... So screw em.

  • I'm 24, and I get 100% of my daily entertainment through the misfortune of others. If that isn't a sufficient answer to your question then I also have netflix and xfinity on demand which I prefer over my regular cable and I get most of my news over the internet although I much prefer the chore of reading the newspaper even though I only get to do it 2-3 times a week.

It ended up working after I tried a little later, I couldn't get live....I'll take it as a win though.
