How full of crap are self-reported 40 times from recruits?

  • If you look at the Nike combines, this really sticks out. The Nike combines 40's are all laser timed from what I understand, meaning they are the most accurate times you will ever find from recruits. Not that 40 times really matter too much, but it is very interesting to see the disaparities.

In Miami- only 1 kid did a better time than a 4.50. In Orlando? Not one kid. In Atlanta? Not one kid. Charlotte? Not one kid. Mobile? Not one kid. In Dallas? Not one kid. Los Angeles? Three kids. Each one of those camps had over 1,000+ kids attend and run 40's.

Fastest recorded time at any of the 11 Nike combines so far - a two-way tie. Two kids out of Houston both ran 4.41's. One kid was 5'7, 150 pounds, the other kid 5'8, 148 pounds. Out of literally over ten thousand kids, not one has broken 4.4 electronically. Guess it just goes to show how full of sheeet the self-reported 40 times of recruits are.

Oh, here is the link of the Nike combine stats:

  • Very true Bracy can probably run a 4.3 but a lot of these kids also run slow because they have no track training. The guys at the combine have track coaches to help them improve their times

very few kids can run actual 4.3's imo. Bracy is definitely one of them.

Most recruits that list 4.3's and 4.4's are probably more like 4.5's and 4.6's - which is still pretty damn fast.

yeah running 40's in an art form to some degree

there is a certain way to do it and jumping out of your stance takes lots of practice in order to perfect it

Its why I really don't get the 40 and if they are gonna have a speed test in underwear you might as well make it the 100m

Far better judgement of speed I think, could be wrong though...... hopefully BamaDookie doesn't come in here and make me look really stoopids

  • I find this extremely interesting. I'm tired of people ripping a recruit because he runs a 4.6 instead of a 4.4 when most likely all the supposition is just a house built on sand.

that has been one of my main pet peeves my whole life

this cane fan on rivals would never shit up about 40 times

most don't seem to realize you can run a 4.6 one time and a 4.4 the next, just depends really

It shows who is fast sure but its no exact science in relation to playing football

Not only that, how much is your speed affected by the weight of the pads? Different for each person.

In my opinion, the 10/20 yard split is all that matters and it should be done in pads, not just shorts.

  • Almost as crap as reported sizes...or measured sizes at camps. '14 kid Orlando Brown measured at some camp at 6'9" 376 last week, then measured this morning at another camp at 6'7". I've seen him from 6'6" to 6'10." Is he "ready to compete at the college level" big or "straight to WWE" big?

    stoptothink

  • Prob still less exaggerated than Arkansas' 40 times.

  • The Nike SPARQ Testing from what I've seen [definitely was the case here in ATL] is conducted on Field Turf. From my experience, Field Turf tests between .08-.16 slower than a fast, firm grass surface and about .13-.20 slower than a kid would run on a track with track spikes.

Example: Micah Reed, 2012 Prospect ran 4.55 at the Nike SPARQ Combine in ATL in 2011.

    Field Turf: 4.55
    Grass (per above range): 4.39-4.47
    Track: 4.35-4.42

I use Reed as example because he is a 1 of the top Sprinters in Georgia having run a 10.69 for 100m and 21.64 for 200m. He was 3rd in the Georgia AAAAA State Meet for 100m in 2011.

****I have a guy on my flag football team, age 25, that is one of fastest guys I've ever played with in flag football over my 15 years of playing. I timed him on Field Turf about 6 weeks ago and he ran 4.55 & 4.57. After resting for about 10 minutes I timed him on the track that surrounded the field and he ran 4.37 & 4.38. The surface matters in terms of how fast people run. Hence, if run on grass or a track.......the self-reported times by prospects could indeed be accurate.

***Most guys run with soccer cleats when running the 40 as Adidas makes Soccer Cleats that are as light as track spikes. I know because I have 2 pair of them, 1 pair of which is my avatar. They are as light as each of the 4 pair of track spikes that I have. Hence, the weight of the shoes is often not a factor when comparing Field Turf to Track times.

Good stuff here. I ran track in college and can definitely attest to running faster on a track or tight grass than I did on long grass or field turf. Do you coach running at all or is this totally just a side passion for you?

I ran in high school and I formed a Track Club about 12-14 years ago with 5 other guys when I was in my mid 20s. We weren't "elite" but ran in Open Meets.....Just former high school track guys staying in shape and trying to get faster for flag football.

My kids run Youth Track now. I train them during the offseason and have trained several high school & college kids for football (usually to improve 40 time) and baseball (60 yard dash).

I was thinking of running Masters Meets this Summer (I'm 37 now) but the aforementioned kid that I train absolutely smoked me when we raced in the 40. So I've probably lost 2 steps instead of 1 as I used to run ~ the same times [in my mid 20s to early 30s] that he's running now. I'm training seriously again now [more so for flag football]....so we'll see about those Master's Meets later this Spring/Summer.

This. Explosion out of the stance is huge, and even an initial hand motion can mess up laser timing. I'm not sure scouts even rely on the laser timing...they just use their own hand times.
