How long can humans live?

  • Is aging a disease that can be cured? Lots of really good articles on both sides out there. Its crazy to think what technology and life will be like for our kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Can the Human Lifespan Reach 1,000 Years -Some Experts Say "Yes"

Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey has famously stated, “The first person to live to be 1,000 years old is certainly alive today …whether they realize it or not, barring accidents and suicide, most people now 40 years or younger...

I'm gonna live forever due to alcohol and poor eating habits.

this is a part of the research that i'm working on right now as well... pretty interesting stuff when you consider that everything that you do is actually slowly killing you. The moment you begin breathing you begin dying... My research is on combating the aging affects of free radicals...

So what you are saying is that we should stop breathing if we want to live longer?

  • Ricky Bobby: No one lives forever, no one. But with advances in modern science and my high level income, it's not crazy to think I can live to be 245, maybe 300. Heck, I just read in the newspaper that they put a pig heart in some guy from Russia. Do you know what that means?

Lucius Washington: No, I don't know what that means. I guess longer life.

Ricky Bobby: No, he didn't live. It's just exciting that we're trying things like that.

  • Alzheimers is one of the more rapidly increasing conditions in medicine. Is it due to the fact that people are living longer or is it an environmental issue stemming from modern life and all of the new compounds and chemicals we all are exposed to?

Ray Kurzweil , considered by some as the new American Albert Einstein , says that people will be able to live hundreds of years in the very near future due to science being able to literally do an " upgrade" to our brains; there is a show on Netflix that outlines this guy and he is one smart mother

Lol not at all... Its kinda like how they have found antioxidants are really good at removing free radicals. So my research is on that same line of things.

Alzheimers has been attributed to plaques/dark spots in the brain if I'm not mistaken. There was a guy I can't remember his name that said its from brain wear and tear. Slight bumps on he head over time that eventually add up. We have a dude at our school that is working on this as well.

I also did some similar research in my PhD program, except mine was tied to insulin secretion and life span as much of my research was in regards to insulin resistance(metabolic syndrome, obesity...). Some interesting studies out there suggesting simply the less insulin your body has to secrete to counterbalance blood glycogen levels, the less inflammation and longer you will live.

    Sounds like Alzheimer's kicking in.

  • that's interesting. i've started tying to change my research into athlete longevity because im actually going into a PhD/MD program for Sports Medicine. But I'm starting to adapt my research into what I call "adaption processing" because I have this idea that all bodily reactions/functions are a response to something. And if you can go back through each pathway you can find the cause of each response. And with this instead of reactive medicine we can do more preventative medicine, and also more natural reactive medicine. Using the bodies responses.
-this is more my pet project.

Kurzweil is a smart man and legit inventor but I'd take all this singularity stuff with a grain of salt. Its essentially religious in nature but using technological salvation as an answer to death rather than spiritual.

  • Basically its an electron that is not paired with another electron. It happens in nature and it tends to have adverse affects on the body. It's kinda hard not to over explain it because I know to much but this link should explain it better than I can without getting excessive. It is unavoidable and occurs basically by breathing. A lot of researches believe this to be one of the main causes of aging(considered a reaction to the environment rather than natural).

Yeah I've heard people refer to a lot of these experiments as similar to occult.

I think the point is that you wouldn't "feel old" till you were like 900 then you'd be old for around 100 years.

Most on here don't take the Bible seriously but man lived that long before Genesis 6 when God shortened their lifespan.

Wait until you are almost 60 and ask yourself again.

You grow old gradually and you adapt. I can't do stuff I did at 30 but I still backpack to fish in the Sierras and pretty much do anything I want to really do. I talked to a friend and his father today, the father is in his mid eighties and had a stroke that crippled his right arm. He is leaving to drive a motorhome to the East coast in a few weeks because he can even though it is tough for him. His grandson is a Trophy Truck Racer for a big energy drink team and he follows him all over the country to watch him race.

You have to be tough to get old. If you can't hack it drink yourself to death now.
