How long does ND continue to get preferential treatment?

  • Big A said...

I get that but how is any of that relevant to today's college football landscape? I don't think college football needs ND like it once did. If they want to participate in the new FBS playoff then they should have to join a conference like everybody else. That logo should only take them so far.

I agree that they suck at football right now but they are getting that preferential treatment because of their history, prestige, and mainly the money they pull in as an independent.

Conferences drool over getting ND because of the amount of money and attention they can bring them

I think 10 years ago this argument was very valid. I just don't think it is anymore. The fact that the ND AD has more power in college football than the AD at Alabama or Texas or USC still doesn't add up to me.

Their tv ratings are horrible. In the past you had a lot of Irish Catholics living in Chicago, NYC, and Boston that were die hards and lived ND football. That seems to be dimishing. The NYT story that was posted ITT shows that Rutgers is a more popular brand in NYC now than ND. That actually surprised me.

McEllroy has been winning more than Tiger these past 2 years. Does that make him more recognizable?

Ugh... Bama and Texas have also been winning for years.

I'm thinking that if the other conference commissioners had the ND AD lead the press conference, ND is still pretty relevant.

  • I grew up outside of Cleveland, very high number of Catholic's ( like myself ) and while the majority of fans were mainly Ohio State fans, there were a lot of of ND fans too. I think that has changed in the past 20 years.

I will say this and be honest. Put ND on your schedule this year and I don't care who you are or who else you play, ND will be your biggest non conference game. Despite if they are good or not.

Nope. Alabama maybe the biggest regional brand in the South right now but nationally people in the northeast and northwest don't give 2 shits about Bama or Texas.

I could easily contend that people in the South and West don't give a shit about ND given their on field irrelevance.

They get a day because they negotiated well back when the BCS was forming and they were somewhat relevant.

If it's about making money Texas is killing ND and so are a number of other schools. If it's about winning, well.....

Maybe it's based on t-shirt sales? shrug

Texas is huge, with state money behind it! Notre Dame has a total enrollment of about 11,000 while Texas has 51,000. One is state run, the other totally on their own. Please.

    The West doesn't give a sh*t?

There are more Domers in the L.A. area and California than anywhere else in the country. The PAC has scheduled them any time they want to play here...even Stanford has a series with them, and ND is USC's greatest rival. Please.

Not sure what student enrollment has to do with anything in this argument.

Number of alums to support a university, it has a lot to do with the argument. Do you expect a university like Rice to compete in TV viewers, tradition and value of a program to a school like Texas?

See that's the thing. I don't hate ND. I just think that they should be required to join a conference like everybody else to compete in the FBS playoff and not get special treatment. Honestly, the preferential treatment they get probably fuels a lot of the hate for ND across the country.

I find it's similar to the hate for the Yankees. ND used to win all the time. First to get their own tv deal. The reason I think most people don't like ND now is because ND still has a say in what happens, and people don't like that. People thinking now that playoffs are coming, ND will start making cupcake schedules to make 11-1 or 12-0 seasons easier.

I think it has a lot to do with the media hype; the second ND does anything good, it seems the media believes they're "back" and the Irish haven't lived up to that hype. For instance, ND goes 8-5 in Kelly's first year and the next year they're preseason #6 in 2 mags (Athlon and Phil Steele).

Someone did an analysis a few years back, so I don't know if it's still true, but basically over the past decade they had the same record as N.C. State or Maryland, but act like they're Pete Carroll USC mixed with Urban Meyer at UF.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

This year, yes. In past years, not so much. I know you guys get dap for not playing mid-majors, but games vs. Wake/Maryland/BC aren't much better than playing Northern IL, and I know you've played Utah, Western Michigan, etc., in addition to all the Service Academies, which aren't the most talented groups around.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
