I kind of agree. I read somewhere that Auburn could make a legitimate claim to as many as nine national championships. As much fun as we make of the bammers for retroactively claiming titles, it's hard to argue with the success it's given them on the recruiting trail. I say we should just claim anything even remotely close to a championship, put banners all over Jordan-Hare, and give the finger to anybody who doesn't like it.

They jumped from eight to eleven in one year (1983). It was an absolute miscarriage of truth and facts.

They added five in '83, actually.

So UA shouldn't count the Rose Bowls in the 20's and 30's just like every other school?

just to be congruent with what EVERY other school claims.

bama was just counting major polls, then added pre AP poll undefeated Rose Bowl championship team (like every one does)

still shouldn't count 1941 but 13 of the 14 are legit.

if you want to look at a team that claims actual BS titles.....look at Michigan. They claim 8 out of 11 that were prior to the AP poll (7 of those 8 they didn't even bowl; and one of the "national titles" was a 5-0 season, yes a grand total of 5 wins). Also, UM claims 1947 national title but they didn't win the AP.

    UM's history is complete BS

I don't doubt it. I'm just saying that Auburn should do the same thing. We've got plenty of seasons where we were named national champions that we don't officially claim. I think we should.

Now I'm confused. So you can only claim a title if you go undefeated and win the Rose Bowl? Darn. I guess we're back to zero.

So why don't you? Serious question. I've always found it odd that your athletic department has the audacity to actually claim 1941 as a championship, but they don't claim that year in the 60s when they went undefeated (67?).

Well, they create their own rules after-the-fact that benefit them, and if you try to do the same, your rules are BS. That's what I've learned over time.

Nevermind the fact that Alabama celebrated those Rose Bowl victories as national titles the moment they were won, nevermind that. (there are numerous newspaper clippings of the day that proclaimed Bama national champs and the games the national championship), nevermind that there wasn't an AP poll during that time, nevermind that the Rose Bowl was the ONLY bowl (up until 1935, the Rose was the only bowl there was)

Right. Bama didn't claim titles that weren't major poll titles until 1983. Thing is, the reason Bama started doing it is because every other school did it. And the titles you are trying to deny are UNDEFEATED Rose Bowl Champion titles (the only bowl there was). Seriously?

Another example of retroactively claiming titles is here:

USC retroactively claimed the 1939 national title in 2004.

"It was brought to our attention by various individuals that we should be claiming the 1939 Trojans among our national champions in football," said Garrett. "We took this matter seriously, did significant research and determined this to be true. That 1939 team was one of the greatest in our history. In fact, its coach, the legendary Howard Jones, acknowledged as much when at the team banquet that year he said this squad was his finest ever at USC, at least in terms of depth."

    Problem with USC now?

USC Now Will Recognize Its 1939 Football Team As A National Champion - USC's Official Athletic Site

USC now will recognize its 1939 football team as a national champion, giving the Trojan program 10 national titles in the sport, Trojan athletic director Mike Garrett announced. USC will salute the surviving members of that 1939 squad at its Oct. 16 home game against Arizona State.

  • I'm not trying to deny anything. I'm simply saying bama added them in 1983. Everybody knows that so it's not a point of contention. I just don't see why alabama of ALL schools would have a problem with another school claiming titles based on their own selected criteria of (insert whatever the hell they want to do to make their school look better) since they did it themselves.

the games at the time they were played were considered the national title. this is fact. posters around here can link the newspaper clippings and the parades of the day that claimed bama was the national champ.

Bama doesn't have a problem with any school claiming anything. If Bama wanted to claim every year that they were voted #1 by a poll Bama would have 27 national championships

  • How bout this: The 1913 and 1914 Auburn tigers went undefeated, outscoring their opponents 417-13. There was no Rose Bowl in either of those years. Why don't we claim these?
