the games at the time they were played were considered the national title. this is fact. posters around here can link the newspaper clippings and the parades of the day that claimed bama was the national champ.

Then why didn't bama claim them until 1983? You think they were just being modest?

I don't know why Bama didn't. But, during the years they were won......national newspapers published Alabama the national champ, Bama had parades down University blvd with banners saying Bama was the national champ, etc.

They weren't major poll titles so i guess they weren't included, but tons of schools claim pre AP poll national titles. Hell, Stanford claims a national title in a year in which they tied Alabama in the Rose Bowl, both teams undefeated. I guess you will continue railing on about Alabama but ignore the numerous other schools that claim pre AP poll national titles

  • Who gives a damn when the school started to officially claim it? Does that take away what the team did on the field? If Auburn wants to claim 9, that's fine by me. If they want to dispute Alabama's double digit titles claim, go ahead. We've still won 3 undisputed titles in the last 20 years, more than Auburn has in their history in terms of undisputed, unanimous titles.

how many times has Auburn gone undefeated and won the Rose bowl before the AP poll was created?

They weren't based solely on the Rose Bowl (or at least that doesn't explain 1941), they were added based on various polls that named them National Champions, regardless of the legitimacy of the poll, or when the poll was created (some were created to retroactively reward titles). Some schools could add a few championships that way, Bama just did it in 1983. I'd like to know which schools use a wire championship only system and which use the Bama type system.

AP Poll was created in 1934, and began continuously at 1936 and I don't see how the Rose Bowl should be considered the bench mark, since it was an invite only thing, and the first Southern team wasn't invited until 1926.

    *Auburn was named NC in some regard, 1913 (didn't give up a single point), 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, 2004, 2010.

As strange as it sounds, technically, only 2009 was unanimous. A poll, in some form or another, named another school champion every other year. While obviously the last three have a legit argument for a unanimous title (based on the Bowl setup, agreed on by most) and an argument could be made for the other years where Bama had a majority of polls, for some years you would have to go back and research the validity/non-validity of each poll that award any team a championship. That's why the whole system is referred to as "mythical."

The Washington Post listed Bear Bryant's first NC at Bama as Bama's first NC.

Truth is, there just isn't going to be a fair argument, especially when you go way back, for any of the title any school claims, until /if there is a playoff that has the NCAA recognition.

    1961 - Ken Rice
    1965 - Tucker Frederickson
    1986 - Bo Jackson
    1988 - Aundray Bruce
    2011 - Cam Newton

I linked my source. The draft stuff was obviously weird back then ... Ken Rice is probably the one you missed since he was drafted No. 1 by the AFL but not by the NFL. I dunno. I just lifted the graphic from ESPN. But the NFL.com link below does list both AFL/NFL picks in their "All Time #1" page and have Auburn with 5. shrug

Fair enough. Ken Rice was the one I wasn't aware of.

Ya, I see no problem with counting that, especially since they list it on the NFL Draft site.

    Thanks for sharin' the knowledge
