For over the past 40 years penn state has had an annual 46 hour no sleeping no sitting dance marathon to raise money for research and the families of kids with pediatric cancer. THON is the worlds largest student run philanthrapy. Last year we raised 10.686 million dollars upping our total to 89 million dollars. This year I'm lucky enough to be one of the 708 dancers who will be standing for all 46 hours.

For every upvote this thread gets ill donate 10 cents to THON (I would do a dollar per UV but I'm pretty sure the last thread like this had over 1200 UV's and as a poor college cannot afford that). If you feel the urge donate more you can at www.thon.org

THON is in 15 days so ill cut this off at Wednesday 2/13 at 10:00 pm

    Thanks in advance guys--- Eddy

    You're welcome.

  • I upvoted from the Bucknuts board.... This is a win/win... We get to help kids in an awesome cause and get to help a nitwit depart with more of his money. Who would down-vote that???

Upvotes only.... keep them rolling in.

I think you intended to type UNnecessary... it was TIC...and a nitwit is a derivative of NITtany Lion... get it.

I was being cute. I guess I missed the mark.

Either way, I'm in support of this

I didn't mean UNnecssary. My post was pretty obviously sarcastic, hence the necessary part. As for the nitwit part, obviously I got it, considering my sarcastic response.

    Get it?

    Now back on topic.

Sorry... having a long day... I need a beer and some dancing myself.

I do wonder how someone stands for 46 straight hours...no sitting at all... what about going to the rest room? Are there injuries asociated with the event?

My wife works in the Student Health Center. Kids come in with injuries on Monday after the event. They also run themselves down and become sick as well.

    All worth it.

Surprisingly very few people drop out. Yes bathroom is allowed, but you have to squat, no sitting. Occasionally people get delirious and don't make it, but usually everyone finishes and goes nuts for the final announcement of the total, gets a ride home and then passes out for 20 hours straight.

They tell all the dancers that to prep, don't have caffeine for a month or more before, don't eat certain foods, etc. Then during the event they feed you and hydrate you constantly. It's pretty cool all around and a great time.

An FYI, you can watch the entire 46 hours online, but if you tune, I suggest the last 4 hours. Experiencing the last 4 hours of THON is pretty incredible.

Hell yes! OSU actually started one recently as well (a bunch of schools have picked up the cause since PSU started)! I highly suggest attending that and watching the PSU one (or going). If it's anything like the PSU one, it will be an amazing experience.

I'm not sure I could stand and dance for 4.6 hours, let alone 46 hours.

I would guess sponsors would be wanting in on this... RedBull, RockStar, StarBucks, heck, maybe even Dr. Scholls

Upvoted....you better hope this doesn't get linked to the Bama board because you will be in debt! LOL Good luck! My company, Northwestern Mutual, is heavily involved with Alex's Lemonade Stand fighting Childhood Cancer. That is awesome how much PSU has raised!

Well, they really don't dance for 46 hours. Every hour(ish) there's the "line dance" that everyone does that's about 10 minutes long. The dancers don't know what time it actually is (well, most have an idea, but they can't wear watches and they cover up the time on the phone), so they aren't really sure how long is left. Aside from the line dance part, you can do whatever you want, most choose to stand around or play with the children who come to watch and play around. There are activities the entire time for the dancers to keep them motivated.

For example, each of PSU's 30ish sports teams do a dance off (football usually wins because it goes by crowd vote). There's a pep rally, there are quizzes and games, a concert at the end, etc. Just lots of things to try to keep up the enthusiasm.

Also, each dancer has a "moraler" who stays with them on 4 hour shifts (4 on 4 off 4 on, etc) to keep them pumped up and do things for the dancers. And you can have people come on the floor (you get a floor pass and put your friends and family on your "list" and they can take the pass and come visit you to keep your spirits up).
