How would you rather die....

  • Of ALS or Alzheimer's?

Being the selfish jerk I am, I'd go with Alzheimers as I wouldn't fully understand what was going on with me.

ALS...is a very cruel disease...just lost my dearest friend to it....I'd take Alzheimers any day....

    Not an option imo.

Just figure these are probably two of the worst diseases to die from... Only one you lose the ability to control yourself physically but keep your mind, and the other you lose your mind but can control yourself physically.

  • As a human race we are getting close to a cure for ALS.

Did an Israeli Company Developed a Cure for ALS?

BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics - an Israeli biomed company currently conducting Phase I/II clinical trials on patients suffering from ALS, reported that at least some of the patients treated with its NurOwn cell therapy shown considerable improvement including walking and talking after being unable to do so because of the progress of the disease.

alzheimers is intensely cruel to your family. my grandad had it and it was a blessing for everyone including him when he got liver cancer and died from that. alzheimers kept him from realizing he was in pain from the cancer and the cancer put him out quickly and brought us all relief. its an awful thing to say but it was a blessing. you wont know how evil alzheimers is until someone you love has it. i dont wish it on ym worst enemy

alzheimers is one of the worst diseases i can think of

Yes it is. My grandfather had it as well. & it was probably the hardest thing I ever dealt with in life. When someone you love & we're so close with is looking at you & has no clue of who you are or really who they are. It's kind of like a prolonged goodbye because they are still here, but they are gone at the same time. Also agree with you, it was kind of a relief when he passed because I knew he was at peace.

    So y'all pick ALS...

It's why I said I was selfish in the OP, because I know how horrible it is for your family.

I've experienced both with people I love...Grandmother Alzheimers....Best Friend ALS....ALS was the worst....a young vibrant woman became trapped in her own body, not able to do anything for herself, and after years wasn't even able to speak and was unable to breathe on her own...I witnessed both.

It was much more painful to watch her go through that (ALS), than to have my Grandmother not know who I was or who she was, for that matter.

The only gift with either is there is an end in sight with ALS, most ALS patients are gone within 3-5 years while AD drags out 10, 15, and 20 years. No disrespect to anyone who has endured either, I envy you nothing as both are horrible diseases, but at least you go before every ounce of your dignity is gone and rapidly enough that it doesn't kill the people you love as well.

yeah i was lucky because he rememebered me since i was the oldest grandkid. i felt really bad for my cousins because he had no idea who they were anymore. the hardest part was every now and then hed return to being normal for a few mins. it was like he was comin back from the dead. youd start talking to him and halfway through the conversation hed be gone again. i felt really bad for my grandma. i cant imagine how hard it was to see someone youve been married to end up like that

    And that's your right.

My personal opinion is I would prefer the horror that is ALS vs the prolonged horror and uncertainty that is Alzheimer's disease.

  • ALS.

I couldn't imagine how horrible it would be for my daughter for her to visit me on my death bed and me not even know who she is.
