  • His personality cult and chavismo are only going to result in someone similar to him getting elected. Could in fact be someone worse tbh.

Those of you (like me) who thought of Chavez as a despot need to read this article. It's very interesting and points out that election monitors saw Venezuela’s elections as some of the most transparent in the world (he won elections by wide margins 14 times), and there were not any political prisoner's in Venezuela (as I had been led to believe) other than those who had tried to overthrow the democratically elected government (7 total). He did use the state run media to harrass his political opposition, and he made friends with some of the worst dictators in the world. He wasn't the 2nd coming of Jesus like Mr. Penn might believe but he wasn't Stalin either. Like most things in life, if the answer is "plain and simple", the person giving that answer to you is probably either simple minded or self-servingly obtuse. His power, like Castro's, was probably due more to our ham fisted attempts to get rid of him than to anything he did to help his people.

I've never understood how someone who says they are a Liberal, or like Sean Penn a Socialist, can overlook the fact that this guy was an anti-democratic despot. Sure, he nationalized a bunch of stuff that had been stolen through corruption, and engineered support for the poor, but he also supported violence in Columbia (rape and murder of women & children), jailed his political rivals, and rigged elections. It's like all the Leftist who praised the Soviet Union because they believed the propaganda that it was a utopia, when in reality it was a police state, or all the Conservatives who supported Hitler and Mussolini for ridding their countries of crime and "liberal degenerates" (Meaning Jews, Artist and Social Gospel Christians) but failed to realize that it (anti-democratic behavior) never stops with the people they consider enemies. The biggest thing I would say to any leftist who would support guys like this is "What was the result (long term) of his policies? Are the poor in his country really better off today than they were when he took office?” His economically innumerate policies have ruined the economy of their country and ultimately will lead to a much poorer existence for those people than if he had simply instituted policies to make their capitalist system less harsh on the poor, or programs to help the poor pull themselves out of poverty rather than throwing out the baby with the bath water. The ultimate point I am trying to make is this. If you think either unregulated markets or total government control of markets is the answer to our problems, you are wrong. To have the most efficient solution to some problems requires that we let unregulated markets decide the outcome; some problems require that the government step in and run things completely; but most require the government to set up a framework where markets can seek efficient outcomes without being manipulated by those with market power. It’s not either/or, its both/and. We need to get beyond all the stupid absolutism of our two party system.

No, he wasn't. Re-read my post, I've changed it in lite of new information. He was a strongman who did all he could to remove any barriers to the practice of his power but he wasn't a psychopathic mass murderer and he wasn't waging pre-emptive wars with his neighbors. He won legitimate elections by a wide margin 14 times. We all (myself included) want easy to understand answers that paint people as either saints or devils but the truth is almost always more complex than that. I don't particularly care for him as a person but to compare him to despots like Stalin or Sadam is misguided and incorrect. I admittedly did that in my prior post and was wrong in doing so.

Where people can draw conclusions are that he was ruthless in suppressing opposition, through the use of media, the state run television always painted the opposition as well not things that can be said. He also took over and created many state run businnesses. However, what should be noted is that prior to his election, Venezuela was often abused and taken advantage of by foreign countries through the use of capital and those very businesses. When you have the money, you call the shots. The guy was paranoid no doubt, and had to remove all barriers and ways that his admitted opponents (USA) would use to overthrow him. Simple logic really, but for his benefit, he wasn't genociding people, in fact his power base is actually the lower classes.

Haha the Nation? You just ate up that socialist propaganda, didn't you? I don't think you could have quoted a more biased source unless you went for the Venezualan state run media.
