Hypothetical Playoff Question...

  • OK, so we are getting another game in 2014. That's great. What if there had been another game starting in 1990? Who wins the following games.

    1990- Georgia Tech vs. Colorado- I say Georgia Tech by 10. Given that they had a loss and a tie and a fifth down win at Missouri, I think the Buffaloes are the least-deserving national champs the past 25 years.

    1991- Washington vs. Miami (Fla.)- I say Miami wins by a field goal, but this Huskies team was very, very good. It was another example of the short-sighted Big Ten and Pac-10 folks thinking an exhibition game between their champions means more to a school than winning a national title.

    1994- Nebraska vs. Penn State- That was a very good Penn State team on both sides of the ball, but the Cornhuskers were rolling right about now. I think Nebraska wins it by 7-10.

    1997- Michigan vs. Nebraska- Great Michigan team but to me the Huskers were more dominant. I think Nebraska wins the game by 10-13.

    2003- USC vs. LSU- That Tigers team was very good, but so were the Trojans. I say USC takes it by a field goal and Saban doesn't get his first National Title.

    2004- USC vs. Auburn- I think the Tigers give the Trojans more of a run for their money than Oklahoma did. Trojans by 10-14.

    If there are others I am missing, my apologies, but you guys tell me what you think.

  • I agree with those except '94. I think that Penn State team wins that game.

    And LULZ in thinking the national championship game is anything but an exhibition.

    Ohio State vs Tennessee?

    I still think the '98 team was Ohio State's best of the BCS era.

    Nebraska-Penn State would have been the best of the bunch. Unreal amount of talent

    I also like '91 Washington-Miami and 2004 Auburn-USC

    My picks:

    Colorado over GT: More battle-tested, but a tight game.
    Miami over Washington: Not the greatest Miami team, but a lot of firepower.
    Nebraska over Penn State: Close, but Nebraska's OL was just dominant
    Michigan over Nebraska: Awesome Michigan game. Great, ball control offense that could make plays downfield.
    USC over LSU: Great game, I'd bet. Just like USC's offense
    USC over Auburn: I say by a field goal.

    That '94 Penn State team had three players taken in the top ten of the '95 NFL draft. I don't believe Nebraska had a player drafted in the first round in the '95 draft.

    Was Ohio State undefeated in 1998 or was that the year they beat undefeated Arizona State and Jake Plummer?

    Ohio State lost to a Nick Saban coached Michigan State team that year. They blew a 15 point lead in the 4th quarter.

    They beat A&M in the Sugar Bowl and finished the season ranked 2nd in both polls at 11-1.

    (The Rose Bowl team was the '96 team.)

  • 2009 - texas versus florida .. I still think Texas matched up much better than OU , and that the team was better than the one that went to the MNC the next year

    You can't compare Nebraska with the other teams of that time based on NFL draft picks. From the 94 to 98 drafts Nebraska was in 4 of 5 (93-97 seasons) title games and only had a total of 5 first rounders the whole time.

    Yeah in a straight four-team playoff I think the list of champions would look dramatically different.

    Miami would probably have more titles IMO.

    I take USC in both 2003 and 2004.

    Also agree with you on Nebraska in 97.

    Penn State in 1994, Ki-Jana Carter would've been the game's leading rusher.
