Or, their rivals could have a fat coach that thinks it's funny to call you just "Alabama", then it would be really confusing.

I meant for Oklahoma and Oregon. Wouldn't work for Ohio or Florida.

I see where you are going with it, but let's not look past the fact that historically over time, Auburn has had a very successful program and is the #3 team in the SEC behind Alabama and Tennessee. Even now, if you look at things, they may be, at worse #4 behind Bama, LSU, and Florida. I am not sure how much a name change would have helped, as for the first 60+ years of Auburn football, the name Alabama was in the University's name and they were still referred to as Auburn by most people. Most people in the state latched on to the early successes that Alabama had in the Rose Bowls in the 20's and 30's and then when things began to even out somewhat, Coach Bryant came along and people in the state gravitated towards him and Alabama unless they had specific ties to Auburn University. When I was young, there were many grandparents and older parents that were Auburn fans, but the next generation in their family leaned towards Alabama because of the success Coach Bryant had.

From its founding until sometime in the early 60's, Auburn had "Alabama" in its name, and Alabama was still a far more successful program.

They're much too racist to have "state" in their name.
