No sh*t you moron. Which is why I said I would refuse treatment on diabetic patients that have diabetes because they're a fat, lazy Pos and not because of other reasons related to an ordinary healthy lifestyle. Learn to read and comprehend Ed.

My point you moron just because someone is fat might not be the reason they have diabetes and I would like seeya prove someone has diabetes because of their weight. Just like all these people claim cigarettes cause lung cancer, well my mother has been a smoker for majority of her 76 years and guess what no lung cancer.

Living in a free market works if there are no negative externalities associated with the choices consumers make. The problem is that people work in their self interest that hurt the rest of society and force the government to help correct the situation. Smoking, drinking and driving, not wearing seat belts, and obesity are all issues in which the consumer has neglected information provided to them and still has acted in their own self interest. I wish that people could live in moderation, without the need for government intervention, but it just won't happen. Government is not the problem, it's the people.

    I disagree, it's population control.

Congratulations, your mother is very, very lucky. However, just because she hasn't gotten cancer yet doesn't mean smoking doesn't cause cancer in a huge number of people.

He really sounds no different than most city councils and mayors around the country, except he runs the largest city in the country.

You're probably right. But there are some cities that should be allowed to retain their edge or depending on your point of view, perceived ugliness. Trying to turn NYC into San Francisco is a crime IMO.

Science has provided sufficient evidence that both smoking leads to cancer and being fat, over weight and out of shape leads to all sorts of health problems. Just because you and your grand mother are in the 3% of people who smoke and are overweight and are both relatively healthy( at the moment) and aren't a drain on society as a whole doesn't make it not true.

No, they should not have to be picked up by insurance companies.

What people are leaving out is that smokers pay much higher rates for health insurance, that offset the increase costs. Add to that the so called "sin tax" put on tabacco products and fines for smoking in areas it's not allowed, they are actually playing more than they cost.

You won't find scientists say that there is a 100% chance that a smoker develops cancer or an overweight person will become diabetic. Same goes with a nonsmoker being 100% free from lung cancer. What they'll say is that it increases the likelihood of it occurring. Your mother may not have lung cancer, but she is at a greater risk than someone who doesn't smoke.

That's my point I guess I just got a little hot and didn't explain myself better. And just because some scientific study says something doesn't always make it right or wrong. There is always going to be a flaw with science because its left to humans to enter and decipher data. For almost every scientific study that says one thing you can find another that counters it.

Unconstitutional. If people want to smoke that is their right, and they shouldn't be forced to pay out the wazoo by the government.

Grow up. Taxes and laws are passed by elected representatives. If you don't like the law of the majority, fight it in the ballot box. There are very few minority rights that we all enjoy as citizens and smoking, drinking, fornicating, etc. are not even close.

    Stop whining.

People vote based on who they "like" personality-wise or who they would like to get a beer with..or who looks more presidential...or whatever. By the people and for the people....for better or for worse.

Do you mean with the Democratic President or the mid-term election of Republicans. They both just respond to their own set of lemmings (i.e. the base) once they are in there.

  • unfortunately I don't think taxing a product or class of products is unconstitutional. ridiculous, somewhat. yes smoking is bad for your health and costs us all in the end in insurance premiums...but its ridiculous how they've just picked one industry to single out...they created/rode that anti-smoking momentum to fleece more money for the government coffers and for no other reason. Then the states all jumped in and sued the tobacco companies to get their piece and part of the settlement was that a portion of the money was supposed to be spent on healthcare costs...was it tracked? no. in South Carolina they used a large portion of it to build water and sewer systems in rural areas, under the auspices that it was health-related by delivering potable water and sanitary sewer to folks. The amount of money spent per house was insane on these projects.

I mean fast food, alcohol, whatever, it would have been easy to to create an anti-whatever campaign and show some health care figures and have everyone break off a piece from those companies, the federal government being the biggest of course. And obviously these will come next. Well the beer lobby will probably keep them off the list, but fast food, snack companies watch out. Soon they will be taxed based ond some cockamaymee formula the surgeon general comes up with to rate nutritional values of foods.

Canada's debt is what? 600 Billion? That's pretty decent. Luckily you guys live at the doorstep of the worlds greatest superpower and reep the comfort and security it provides. Otherwise you'd have to spend more military money. We should be taxing you biotches for that.

Same for Europe and Japan and several others, they all are on military welfare then the idiots mock us for spending so much on our military.
