I don't mind being called a liberal.

  • Most people that we consider ahead of their time, were liberal thinkers in their day.

  • Classical liberals, or socialists?

    Classical liberals, or socialists?

This is the problem. Everyone has a different view-definition.

  • Not a liberal, but I don't know why it would be insulting to call someone as such.

Socialists, Communists on the other hand...

    Link?

I don't think there is a need to link. It is pretty common sense.

If you would like be to list some names, I would include Plato, Aristotle, Marco Polo, for starters as far as the ancient days.

I would include James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Marting Luther King Jr, and Nelson Mandela.

Liberal doesn't have to mean Democrat either. It is a progressive way of thinking, that is more open-minded and willing to change. There are a lot of close-minded Democrats in this world as well. If you need an example, I point to Al Sharpton and Charlie Wrangle.

I would say that the only successful President we have had in the past 50 years that was a Republican though was Ronald Reagan, but that's just my opinion and I am in no way saying that all the Democrats were successful either.

I am not closed off to other's opinions either. I actually don't think that the first Bush was a bad President either, but it is hard to lable someone successful that did not get re-elected. If W. Bush would have ended on different terms, I believe he could have gone down as a successful President, but I don't think he was able to help transition the country from the days of 9/11. Personally, I think he handled that situation greatly, as well as the years after. Once he landed on the aircraft carrier and declared victory, we lost him. Up until then, I didn't have a bunch of complaints, although I didn't vote for him either time.

Socialism and Communism have led to horrible situations, that's for sure. Mainly because it takes power away from the people and into a central hand. That central hand is eventually going to be corrupted. There are some good ideals with both ideas though and Socialism can be a good jump start to an empoverished country, but there has to be a time table involved to end that type of governing, but there never is. You can somewhat build up your masses, by spreading the wealth, then open a free market capitalist society.

In a perfect world, the transistion could work, although there are no good examples, because no one is then willing to give up power.

I think it is great. No one is right and no one is wrong. Hopefully the country can always stay somewhere in between.

As far as the founding fathers go you could definitely say they were radicals. I don't know about liberal thought. We went to war cuz they raised are taxes to a whopping 6%. JFK was considered a conservative democrat. Not a liberal. Like other people have said its your personal definition.

    Classical liberalism != modern liberalism

Classical liberalism = Locke, Smith, Hobbes, etc.
    democracy, property rights, constitution... classical

Modern liberalism is basically FDR and more contemporary democrats.

    Two very different things.

That quote provides evidence that he was a classical liberal. Please go look up the definition of "classical liberal" before commenting further in this thread.

But everyone who is truly intelligent is a liberal thinker but politically conservative. That last part is probably where you missed the boat.
