I don't think we have a gun problem

  • We have media, sociological, and economic status problem.

    We have an economy that is struggling to provide the necessities of the masses, folks that were once doing ok or even well now are operating their lives at a lower standard which creates pressure on the family and the head of the household to boot. Families are now having to take on multiple jobs within the household just to maintain what they have already acquired. Now husbands and wives don't spend time together. Dad's and mom's don't have time to raise their children so the children just grow up, sometimes feeling rejected. That in turn projects out into their society and peers. All of these issues and more reek havoc on a persons mind, frustration, anger set in and then they just want someone to listen or help. When they have reached the end of their rope they lash out.
    The media over the last 40 years has done a terrific job of sensationalizing these actions, affecting peoples opinions this is one way these folks can demand that someone listen them when they say they have had enough

    Guns are not the problem, we as a society are and we refuse to look at ourselves to say that we are glutenous, selfish, and insecure. Our caste system is so far out of whack that it is making people do crazy things. IMHO

  • We have a spiritual problem. We were a nation founded on biblical principles and we decided that we are more enlightend and strayed from that. We are now morally banckrupt. I expect more of this kind of thing to happen. I pray for the families effected by this senseless act.

    I disagree and agree with this. While I agree that something is lacking, I disagree that it is religion. What people need is a code of ethics to live by. In the past it was religion, now? There really isn't one.

  • China had a similar situation yesterday, someone tweaked inside of a school.

    Guy had a knife and injured 22 people, this guy tweaked but he had a gun so he was able to kill 28 people.

    So you say you don't have a gun problem which is a fine, but at the end of the day if this kid doesn't have a gun, odds are either none of this happened, or it would have been much less severe.

    Guns make can often make bad situations worse.

    Fertilizer's primary use isn't to kill or harm things.

    Why don't our soldiers or police officers carry fertilizer with them?

    Some things need to be killed. (deer, turkey, hogs... Robbers/Rapist, etc.)

    Again, fertilizer isn't made specifically to kill things.

    You are using a horrible slippery slope argument. It's a big reason this issue can't be discussed with reason and sensibility.

    If people start using fertilizer's to kill people on the regular, then yes probably.

    I love how gun control turns into sarcasm from the gun supporters.

    It's either sarcasm to deflect from the actual discussion, or saying "gun control would only keep the guns out of law abiding citizens hands" which is categorically false.

    Also many of these murderers are "Law Abiding Citizens" until they tweak and decide to kill a bunch of people.

  • As I've said in multiple threads, the problem is we view mental problems as some taboo subject and refuse to talk about it. And in many cases we ridicule people for most of their lives because they have something wrong upstairs, this compounding the problem. We as a society need to grow the fvck up and stop acting like pissy 8th graders. If someone needs help, help them get it.

    We can argue this to the end of time, but guns are here to stay. There are 300 million guns in the hands of private American citizens. Washington could ban the sale of all guns tomorrow and there would still be 300 million to deal with and they aren't going to be voluntarily surrendered to the government. So we have to find a way to treat the problem (people with mental illnesses) and the symptoms (violence) will get better.

    Well, most black on black violence is likely related to other criminal activity (drugs, gangs, etc). Those kids in CT (and the people at VT, Aurora, Columbine, etc) didn't go looking for trouble..... it just found them.

  • It all reminds me of a Louis CK bit, where he talks about how no good marriage ever ends in divorce. No mass shooting is done by a well adjusted, "normal," good human being. Literally zero times has that been the case. The people that do so have problems and they need help.

    Do pencils misspell words?
    I had a friend get killed by a drunk driver, not one time did I blame in on budweiser or the bar owner. More people are killed every year by drunk drivers but you don't hear people say band alcohol.
    If you want to band guns, do you honestly think people with illegal guns are going to turn them in because they are told to?

    Agreed. I'm not naive enough to think that the US will ban handguns, or take away guns from citizens, but the system needs work.

    Whatever is happening right now clearly is not working, so something needs to be done about it. Like I said earlier, the government needs to stop just reacting to these situations and commenting on how tragic they are after the situations, they need to do something about it proactively.

    Obviously I have no clue how or otherwise I would be in politics, but the decision makers need to do something about it, and now.

  • There is a difference between gun control and gun ban. I don't advocate gun ban because it is not feasible. But gun control measures should be taken. Too many people are obtaining guns legally and using them in these massacres. We need stricter background checks. There is also no reason for anyone to own an assault rifle for personal use. Their intent is to inflict as much damages as quickly as possible. I don't see any civilian needing that type of gun.

Go ahead and try to take away our constitutional right and see how that works out for you. Making a bomb is pretty simple. I'd rather deal with a few idiots and their guns than a bunch of extremist setting off bombs.. To each his own though.

    Guns primary purpose is to do harm. That isn't true for the other things you listed.
